I also taught AP Computer Science for 2 years at an elite private school. Turning your weakness into your strength

I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, from Geometry through Calculus III, from general computer knowledge through utilizing the advanced functions of Microsoft Access. I have tutored people ranging from my peers to people three times my age, to as young as third graders. My motto has evolved into "Helping those who feel they can not be helped"
I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always been an honors student and am currently taking the highest levels of math (AP Calculus) and spanish (Spanish 5) at my high school. I am involved in Peer Mentors at my school and have tutored multiple students in a variety of subjects. I have also tutored students outside of school, mostly in math. I have 13 years experience teaching high school and middle school math. I have had a fulfilling teaching career thus far. I currently teach at Providence High School in Matthews, North Carolina. I have six children of my own and know that every child learns differently, even when they come from the same family. I believe the majority of children can master the material they are presented in school, but it is a matter of time. Many children take a little more time to understand the concepts and master the skills needed to move on to the next level. Sadly many of these children aren't given the time to do it and are just passed on to the next level. My teaching style ultimately depends of the student. I work much better with an individual or small group than with a class because I can find the angle that works best for each student. For younger children, I like to make learning into different games to keep their attention. For older students, I think it is important to establish some level of confidence early on within a subject so that they do not get too discouraged while new material is presented.
