My most recent department chair, Dr. Marie Jureit called me the best teacher on campus. I've taught and tutored students for 37 years in music theory and composition, music of Africa and Latin America, and mathematics through college freshman algebra. I first started teaching in 2003 as a substitute to supplement the income from my guiding business during the slower portion of the year. After showing that I was very capable in the classroom and could quickly develop a strong rapport with coworkers and students, I was hired for the year when another teacher left unexpectedly. I went to school for the next year at the University of Kentucky, did not finish my degree, but earned enough credits to be hired by to teach in their Alternative School. I taught and was a leader and innovator at Cropper Alternative School for the next five years, until I decided to move to this part of the country after a recent divorce. As a student, I am driven to understand the nature of things. As a teacher, I work to help others understand them. From my experience, I have learned to be patient with people who are afraid of failure and to push students who are easily bored with basic work. I have earned a bachelor's degree in computer science because computers are the tool with the most potential to enable us to understand the world, second only to the mind. To this end, I encourage my students to think long and hard about the problem they want to solve before they put too much work on a false lead. I find that the better students are aware of this and struggling students become more enthusiastic about learning after they discover this.
