A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy tutoring because I find it rewarding to build relationships with students and observe their progress. I recognize that it is crucial to build rapport with students in order to gain their trust and respect, and as a result, I try to discover my students’ goals and interests. Once a student realizes that I genuinely care about her success, she is more likely to work hard and obey my instructions. In addition, I am a patient individual, which is a useful quality to have when one is having difficulty getting a student to comprehend a particular concept. Furthermore, I make sure to praise my students for their hard work because I know that low confidence can inhibit successful learning.
I graduated cum laude from the University of California, Irvine with a BA in history and minors in biology and psychology. Earning a history degree required me to write several essays, including ... read more

I look at each student as an individual. I think it is important to determine which teaching style works for that person. I would use this information to choose the best method for each student. I think it is important to make learning fun at every age. Education should not be a chore but something to embrace. It would be one of my goals to limit fears or mental blocks that a student may have because they think they can't do it. I would focus on each students potential for success.
I have worked with children age 0 to 17 over the years. I tutored my daughters friends when she was in High School in History and some English especially literacy. My primary experience is with preschoolers but I have also been a day camp counselor for 3rd graders, a Girl scout Cadette leader and volunteered at the teen center.

More About This Tutor...

I still subscribe to some fundamental education axioms. Paramount to successful teaching are: - Enthusiasm for and knowledge of the subject. - Awareness of learners' needs and abilities. - Appropriate and effective evaluation of delivery and learning.
My high school education was comprised of "alternative" education and a summer semester at Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. Between 1983 and 1989, as a long-term substitute teacher for the ROP (in CA), I taught Computer Sciences (which included Elementary Math and Algebra)at Anderson Valley High School in Boonville CA. As a full-time teacher, I taught Culinary Arts for the ROP for four years at the Fort Bragg High School, Fort Bragg, CA. I tutored students off-hours on an ongoing basis during my tenure as a teacher. For the purpose of this application, I am very interested in tutoring learners in English. Everyone has style of teaching that is unique. Mine is at first appearance very laid back, but on closer inspection is very powerful and extremely effective in the long run. My strategy as a teacher is to study and assess a student first, then to develop a plan with the student regarding how we should approach a task or problem. I am big on having students develop a stronger internal locus of control, empowering them to feel capable to tackle anything that they might encounter with or without the help of others.
I first started teaching in 2003 as a substitute to supplement the income from my guiding business during the slower portion of the year. After showing that I was very capable in the classroom and could quickly develop a strong rapport with coworkers and students, I was hired for the year when another teacher left unexpectedly. I went to school for the next year at the Univ ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I begin teaching students after assessing their needs and experiences. My students are active learners as I instruct with games, music, and art. Students are engaged because the material I use relates to their level of development and life experiences. When students are engaged learning is enjoyable. Positive behavior supports include appropriate praise for specific tasks and affirmation for accomplishments. It is rewarding teaching children, observing their academic growth, and being a part of their discoveries in learning.
With a BA in Liberal studies my excellent writing skills complimented the thesis I wrote as a Masters of Science in Education student, and I grew as a teacher of reading when I researched strategies that would increase the academic success of a struggling first grade student learning to read. I have experience as a reading tutor for one year in a public el ... read more
