Let Mrs. Johnson Make You a ROCK STAR!

I have been teaching in Chico, California for the past 26 years. I have experience with grades K-6, but really prefer 2-5th grades. I have tutored for many years, helping struggling students catch up with their peers. I have many tricks and resources to use. I have laptops and curriculum, not to mention a in-depth knowledge of state standards. I know what the children will be expected to accomplish on Common Core Standardized Tests. I can help prepare your child for the next grade, catch up with their peers and/or get them ready to CCSS tests that are given in the spring. I LOVE working with children one-on-one or in small group settings, as you can really see growth and the sparkle in their eyes when they feel successful! I love to teach and would love the opportunity to support your child!
I teach with passion! I have high expectations coupled with love and support. I am motivati ... read more

Experienced and very friendly English teacher ready to help!

I love working one on one with a student. Wherever the student needs help or wants improvement, that is where I meet them. I'm very patient and extremely friendly, and I am determined to help a student understand in any way I can! I also think cookies help studying :) Sometimes, unusual methods like movie clips, cartoons, reading passages, or other "real-life" experiences help to solidify a topic, so I'm not afraid to think outside the box!
I have been teaching all my life. Last year, I lived in Prague, Czech Republic, and taught English to students aged five through adult. They included children, accountants, analysts, engineers, energy experts, and lawyers. I've also taught swimming lessons to individual students and group classes for over ten years. I have a Master's in Creative Writing and poetry, and I have worked as a freelance writer, editor, proofreader, and teacher for man ... read more

I think that it is important to make sure that the student understands the concepts being learned in each subject rather than learning how to do one particular problem. Too often students forget the basics that they learned before because they thought that they were finished only to find that it comes up again in a more advanced subject. My goal is to get students to understand and apply the concepts to different situations other than the ones that are directly in front of them at the moment. I tend to push students to work hard and challenge them to think about the process instead of just giving answers.
During High School I taught at a science camp for 3 years. After college I went and lived in China and taught university level ESL for 3 years. I have worked for a few local tutoring organizations in the last 2 years as well as doing private tutoring. I have worked with age ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In 2009, I was a professional tutor(as opposed to a peer-tutor) for the Biology Department of Ulster County Community College, NY, for students struggling with: Bio 100 for non-science majors, Bio 101—an intro course for those planning to continue but lacking a strong background, Bio 105—General Bio required by all biology-related programs, and Bio 109—Human Bio for non-science majors. I noted that if students needed Biology assistance, they often needed Chemistry assistance also, so the basics of that had to be included in order for topics like macromolecules and cellular respiration to make any true sense at all. I have substitute taught for the past four years, and conducted two graduate field studies.
I strive to make connections to real life by using real specimens when possible, familiar situations, manipulatives, current events, and such to facilitate comprehension. ... read more

First and foremost I love to write, and I'm more than happy to extend a helping hand no matter the subject. I encourage my students to write about subjects that interest them, all the while teaching the organizational tools to become effective and influential academic and creative writers. Because I have experience teaching a variety of writing courses I have a wide knowledge of form vs function techniques. Ultimately, I enjoy teaching students to find their own voice and to feel confident writing on any suject for a variety of venues and genres.
I've always been drawn to the creativity and knowledge needed to use writing in very powerful and effective ways. I earned my bachelor's degree, taking classes that focused on writing for both stage and screen as well as a multitude of writing and reading comprehension classes in a wide range of subjects both academic and creative: the ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a Regent's Scholar at UC Davis, I sought to develop skills in both the sciences and the liberal arts. As such, I earned two bachelors degrees, a BS in Civil/Environmental Engineering with an emphasis in Environmental Engineering, and a BA in Japanese. I have an extensive background in math and science, particularly in physics and chemistry, due to the former. I also have a plethora of experience in writing persuasive essays, technical papers, and research papers. My two years of tutoring experience ranges from basic mathematics for elementary school students to advanced engineering principles for college students.
When working with children, I try my best to be engaging, interactive, and fun. If necessary, I'll use props (e.g. building blocks) to help illustrate concepts, and I always try to ask many questions along the way to make sure my explanations are clear. With olde ... read more

I have always been passionate about receiving and giving the best education. As a graduate of a top-level liberal arts college I was able to hone my skills in English writing and composition. I received a certificate in Elementary Education both in New York and California, and have taught in elementary schools for three years in grades 3, and a 1st/2nd grade combo class, respectively. I also have 2 years of experience substituting in elementary and middle schools, and 1 year of experience tutoring in English, as well as math. My most recent experiences have been teaching ESL students as an instructional assistant, as well as working one-on-one with autistic and special needs children in a special day class for 1 and a half years.
I have always loved to teach children because it excites me to see them really grasp a concept, and overcome a hurdle they thought was beyond their reach. ... read more

Working as a High School English teacher for seven years, in Alternative Education, has greatly honed my skills in assisting students to excel. Teaching critical thinking skills to those struggling to grasp concepts, provides great benefit in every subject area. I have used my expertise in reading and writing to open doors for others as they begin to learn, in confidence, and strengthen their own skills. Aside from substitute teaching--whereby I have taught every subject area, I have, as a full-time teacher, taught a variety of English classes (literature and writing) and a psychology elective.
I believe that every person has a specific set of gifts, talents and abilities that is unique to each of us. A Little Bit About Me...

I have been an elementary school teacher for nearly 18 years. I taught for 7 years in Elk Creek and 10 years in Los Molinos where I currently teach 2nd and 3rd grade. I earned Glenn County Teacher of the Year in 1998 and Tehama County Teacher of the Year in 2007. I was also named Glenn County Teacher of the Week for Channel 7 News in 1999. From 1992 to 1996 I trained in study skills for the History and Geology departments at Chico State through the Equity Services Office. This included a 3 hour training session each week in addition to tutoring individually and in groups for struggling college students. This was 4 of the greatest years ever! This University training really helped prepare me for the world of teaching and tutoring.

I always try to be very patient and supportive when I'm tutoring. I am a strong believer in the Socratic method of teaching, which from my understanding, means asking the student questions regarding what they already know about a concept in order to customize the lesson and/or "lead" them to the answer. I also try to use analogies and real life examples that are tailored according to the interests of my student. For example, if my student is interested in sports, then I try to use sports analogies and examples to describe difficult concepts. If my student is interested in science, then I use science analogies and examples, etc. I also try to break down complex concepts into smaller "pieces" so that I can help my student analyze and understand the concept one piece at a time. It is a well known fact that there is a direct relationship between the average educational level of a natio ... read more

At the tender age of 25 I have already been admitted into the California State Bar as an attorney. I graduated from the University of California, Irvine earning my Bachelor's degree, with cum laude honors, in only 3 years. Shortly thereafter I attended Southwestern Law School where I was a member of the Trial Advocacy Honors Program. I am an excellent writer with exemplary grammatical and communication skills. During my time in college and law school I have helped students better understand multiple subjects, including: Writing, Law, Political Science, Speech and Debate, and Philosophy. In addition, I have helped students apply and gain acceptance into various colleges and law schools.
I am a firm believer that everyone learns in different ways. This being the case, I like to identify a person's strengths and weaknesses so that I can create an individual plan that is tailored ... read more

My teaching style would be that of Guided Discovery. This is a highly interactive style which leads the student to uncover the answer themselves as opposed to the teacher simply reciting the answer to them. Guided Discovery requires the student to learn by doing therefore developing necessary problem solving and deductive skills that will make them better learners and thinkers both now and in the future. I implement this style by asking leading questions, giving examples, making analagies and asking the student what they think or ask them to explain how they came upon a certain conclusion. This ensures that the desired cognitive skills and strategies are being learned.

During my time as a student studying Biological Sciences, I encountered varying levels of math and science ranging from statistics to calculus and basic biology to various types of advanced physiology. I have taken the opportunity to tutor fellow classmates and younger students in science through the biological honor society, Omicron Theta Epsilon. I have also tutored children for the past year in science; for the first half of the year I tutored students from grades 3-6, and for the second half I tutored students from grades K-3. In the second portion I also assisted in lab and teaching design.
In teaching, I believe it to be very important to gain the student's interest within the subject matter. With an interest comes greater understanding and retention. Providing a structure that can be worked through systematically can be very helpful in the learning process. Not all students ... read more

As the school I taught at was private, the students were very competitive. I found my lectures and class activities reached 90% of the students. The remaining 10% were the students I especially loved to instruct. These students had difficulty learning the subject in a traditional fashion, so I was forced to explain the subject from a different angle. The individual attention I gave students before and after class proved to be invaluable.
As Cal Poly SLO has one of the most competitive engineering programs on the west coast, I have a depth of knowledge in both math and sciences. After earning my B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, I lived in Germany, Ohio, and Central California while trying to figure out my place in this world. I settled for two years in Salinas, California where I taught pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry to junior high and high school students. I believe this ... read more
