I teach in patterns and find methods to make things easier for the student to learn. This is how I learn everything. I will explain what I am tutoring until the student totally understands. I have a lot of patience and a lot of compassion for helping students learn what they do not understand, and I am good at it.

When working with children, I try my best to be engaging, interactive, and fun. If necessary, I'll use props (e.g. building blocks) to help illustrate concepts, and I always try to ask many questions along the way to make sure my explanations are clear. With older students I will use a slightly more textbook approach, but keeping lessons interactive still remains essential, and props may still be useful in some circumstances. In both situations, I try to find which learning styles work best for the student and present lessons based on those. Each person has a unique way of learning, and if a teacher takes the time to understand it, then the student's true potential can be reached.

During High School I taught at a science camp for 3 years. After college I went and lived in China and taught university level ESL for 3 years. I have worked for a few local tutoring organizations in the last 2 years as well as doing private tutoring. I have worked with ages 8-24 for tutoring and teaching and I have taught/tutored English, Math, Science, and history up through the 8th grade level.
I think that it is important to make sure that the student understands the concepts being learned in each subject rather than learning how to do one particular problem. Too often students forget the basics that they learned before because they thought that they were finished only to find that it comes up again in a more advanced subject. My goal is to get students to understand and apply the concepts to different situations other than the ones that are directly in front of them at t ... read more

I believe that every person has a specific set of gifts, talents and abilities that is unique to each of us. Education, through its varied forms, is vital in the process of equipping children with the ability to grow and walk in their fullness so that they are confident in contributing their part to the world. With this belief, teaching must start with the person and then move to the content. I very much enjoy the process of teaching and learning with others. And, although I am now highly educated, I struggled, at times, in school. I went from being "in the lowest reading group" in third grade to graduating with honors in college. Through my own journey of learning how to learn, I am an insightful and caring teacher.

More About This Tutor...

I have always loved to teach children because it excites me to see them really grasp a concept, and overcome a hurdle they thought was beyond their reach. Each child has so much potential-far greater than any of us give them credit for when we first meet them! I love to tap into the unique learning styles of each child, and really draw on what motivates him/her and makes him/her excited to learn. When this connection is made, the possibilities are endless for what they can learn, and how far they can go.
I have always been passionate about receiving and giving the best education. As a graduate of a top-level liberal arts college I was able to hone my skills in English writing and composition. I received a certificate in Elementary Education both in New York and California, and have taught in elementary schools for three years in grades 3, and a 1st/2nd grade combo class, respective ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I strive to make connections to real life by using real specimens when possible, familiar situations, manipulatives, current events, and such to facilitate comprehension. I found from tutoring college students having difficulties with complex concepts such as protein synthesis, DNA replication, photosynthesis, and meiosis, that for all students, “hands on” can be a very helpful, and ultimately a more efficacious and expedient, way to teach. It can not only be a welcome and refreshing change/respite from the ‘usual textbook and ditto’ drill, but also helps by illustrating complex processes and concepts in a basic comprehensible manner first; I then add the more difficult material to the ‘firmer’ foundation.

A Little Bit About Me...

I've always been drawn to the creativity and knowledge needed to use writing in very powerful and effective ways. I earned my bachelor's degree, taking classes that focused on writing for both stage and screen as well as a multitude of writing and reading comprehension classes in a wide range of subjects both academic and creative: theatre, english, literature, poly-sci, astronomy, anthropology, journalism, etc. While my education might suggest I'm only a playwright or poet, my extensive training has been extremely academic as well. I am confident in my grammar and essay structuring skills. After receiving my MA in New Zealand I spent two years tutoring beginning and intermediate academic writing and eng/reading lit courses (both for native and non-native english speakers) as well as theatre/eng lit courses. I also have experience free-lance tutoring one-on-one at a university level, a ... read more
