A teacher never stops teaching, and never ceases learning.

I have to first find the learning style of the student. As a teacher, I find that students have diverse ways of learning and that I must adapt my teaching style to their needs. For instance, I have some students who are auditory learners and sometimes retain information more if information is read orally to them. Some students must have a generous amount of explanation as to the content of what he or she is reading while otheers require many visual cues to accompany their learning. It really depends upon the student.

Creative, energetic tutor with special needs experience

I homeschooled a gifted third grader, including administering standardized end-of-grade test, for 1 year. I have tutored homeschooled first and third graders in math, reading, writing, social studies, and art for the last 6 months. I tutored a 8-12-year-old with autism spectrum for 4 years. I provided respite for children with disabilities for several years. I have coached Special Olympics swimming for 11 years for teens and adults. I have informally given piano lessons. My comments on tutoring Special Education : I am an EC TA in a self-contained AU classroom and I am still trying to work on my Masters in Special Education.

I have been working with Elementary children for over 10 years now. I have helped all ages with homework, sports, and life skills (current job now as EC TA). I also have been coaching for the past five years in cheerleading and soccer, but in different age groups. I have been in the school system for the past year in a half and have worked on phonics, math, science, and life and social skills with AU students.
I like to get on the child's level and teach that way. I like to ask the children what their best way is to learn and what are some of their favorite things are so I can incorporate them into the lesson.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with children. I've taught acting at the Durham Arts Council for three years. The duties from that position included directing students in performances which I helped them create. The plays were written around themes chosen by the camp director. So, in essence, the children and I would research those themes and develop stories which I would then turn into plays using my expertise.
