I first started teaching in 2003 as a substitute to supplement the income from my guiding business during the slower portion of the year. After showing that I was very capable in the classroom and could quickly develop a strong rapport with coworkers and students, I was hired for the year when another teacher left unexpectedly. I went to school for the next year at the University of Kentucky, did not finish my degree, but earned enough credits to be hired by to teach in their Alternative School. I taught and was a leader and innovator at Cropper Alternative School for the next five years, until I decided to move to this part of the country after a recent divorce. My approach to teaching is to provide what is needed, and sometimes that is not limited to the explicit task at hand. As an English teacher/tutor, I have often found that, rather than merely showing students how to recognize a complete sentence and use correct punctuation and grammar, the more important thing is to prove to them that they can think, and that they are intelligent. To this end, I use gentle Socratic questioning to stimulate students, loosen them up, get them interested, and increase their comfort. Often, what comes out of a student's mouth is surprisingly wonderful, and I quickly say, "That's great! Write that down!"
