My most recent department chair, Dr. Marie Jureit called me the best teacher on campus. I've taught and tutored students for 37 years in music theory and composition, music of Africa and Latin America, and mathematics through college freshman algebra. As Director of the Freshman Program, I was responsible for designing and implementing programs in developing reading and writing proficiency, and overall ability to succeed in academics. I first started teaching in 2003 as a substitute to supplement the income from my guiding business during the slower portion of the year. After showing that I was very capable in the classroom and could quickly develop a strong rapport with coworkers and students, I was hired for the year when another teacher left unexpectedly. I went to school for the next year at the University of Kentucky, did not finish my degree, but earned enough credits to be hired by to teach in their Alternative School. I taught and was a leader and innovator at Cropper Alternative School for the next five years, until I decided to move to this part of the country after a recent divorce. I was a community college English teacher for 12 years at Vista Community College in Berkeley, CA (now Berkeley City College). I taught in a special program tailored to working adults who had returned to school in order to earn their Associate of Arts degrees. This was not an academically confident population. They required enormous encouragement, personal attention, and coaching. I was very successful in this position because I was willing to talk with students on the phone, meet with them after class, and even respond to their essays at length on cassette tapes--my own idea!
