I am a recent college graduate and I am looking for employment within my field. I have two years experience tutoring an elementary student. I worked with a student in second grade and tutored her in both Math and English. Because her mother and I communicated regularly, she was able to tell me of improvements and areas of subjects that needed more attention. I started tutoring in 7th grade back in 1976. I have been tutoring my own kids for over 14 years. I have been a Scout leader for over 9 years. I worked with boys ages 5 to 18 years of age. I have brought 2 learning disabled teens into my home to help them graduate High School. Both have gone on to be Certified Welders. I have presided over the Parental Acceptance Committee for both Fremont and all five of WSOS HeadStart Counties and all the centers in the School Districts of those counties. I am currently a tutor and mentor for a fifth grade child in Delaware, Ohio via the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. I have gained a tremendous amount of experience working with this student in and out of the classroom, and it has allowed me to develop my teaching skills in all areas of curricula. I tutor my student in each and every one of her subjects. I also informally tutor some of my peers at Ohio Wesleyan University, particularly in Science classes, in which I am most experienced.
I am a very interactive teacher. I find it helpful for the students I work with if I am able to relate a lesson to something else with which they are familiar. The methods of teaching I was instructed when I obtained my Bachelor in Education at the University of Akron Ohio, from 1989-1991, was the following Integrated, Whole language approach and Montessori. The method we were instructed to use in the Akron city school system was Integrated which uses basic and whole language approach language Arts. These integrated units allow us the opportunity to make sure children are learning relevant information and applying that knowledge to real life scenarios. I believe that students learn best when they are involved in the process. Therefore I like to put students in charge of their learning-whether it is presenting information gathered for a presentation or helping to develop the topics that will be discussed in a particular unit; as long as they are involved and not passive in the process students will learn.
