More About This Tutor...

My experience, (both academic and work)has been widely varied, ranging from research and engineering to financial management in a corporate environment, followed by golf course design and landscape management. In addition I used my experience in construction and woodworking to build and market patio furniture. Unfortunately the housing depression of the mid 2000's caused the business to be non profitable and was closed. Since 2005 I have been semi retired and used my construction experience to work at a lumber and hardware store.

Certified Teacher

I have been working with kids of all ages for a long time. I love to see them learn and grow. That moment when they "get" something is magical! I spent the 2011-2012 school year teaching at a title 1 school in Collier County and have grown exponentially from it! I had several students in my class who needed special help, and half of my class were English language learners. These students have helped me to strengthen my skills and adapt to different student's styles.
I like to make teaching fun! If a student is bored they aren't going to be putting 100% into their work. I also use a positive reward system and celebrate all achievement. Even if it is minor.

A Little Bit About Me...

I define teaching as the process by which I help students to learn. I guide learning by helping students individually, at other times instructing an entire class, and still at other times by encouraging class participation. Spontaneity is a valued part of teaching. If the teaching appears memorized, not spoken diaphragmatically, not spoken with eye contact, and if there are no visual aids, learning will likely not take place. Learning is, of course, the main purpose of education. It is the goal of every student and the task of every teacher to increase knowledge and understanding in the classroom. I feel that the concept of learning should be focused around four main areas. Independent thought is essential to the development of each student. Being able to form unique independent ideas to solve problems will serve them both in and outside of the classroom. Group interaction is also an imp ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have over 350 hours of experience working in middle school intensive reading classrooms, 180 hours in a 7th grade science room, completed an internship in a 7th and 8th grade science classroom, and volunteered at Naples Botanical Gardens. Starting in the fall I will be interning full time in a honors marine science class.
I believe all students are capable of learning. It is the role of the educator to help students identify their strengths and provide them with the tools that will help them integrate new knowledge into existing schemas. I try to integrate metacognitive tools into content teaching to instill life long learning.

I've been a teacher's unofficial little helper since I was in Elementary, helping the students of my class that the teacher simply didn't have the extra time to help. From then on, I helped and even eventually taught my younger siblings when the current school system left them in the dust, and even helped them get a leg up and advance faster than their classmates. I've tutored a few younger kids in various subjects in my high school years, as well as occasionally teaching Taekwondo classes.
My teaching style is flexible, tailored to the specific needs of the student in question. Everybody learns differently and at different paces!

I try to keep students very active in my classroom. I vary my instruction between direct instruction, hands on learning and cooperative activities. I have completed the week long training on cooperative learning at the Kagan Summer Institute. We use cooperative activities in my class daily. I have also completed Quality Schools Training with the Lee County School District. Therefore, I understand the importance of a data driven approach to teaching students. I am very active in my school. I am the chair if the rewards committee, head of my team, the girls volleyball coach, and the faculty advisor of the spirit club.
I hold a middle school integrated curriculum certification. I am currently teaching 7th grade math, but have previously taught middle school social studies and science. Prior to beginning my teaching career I was the manager of my family's restaurant business, w ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have been working with children for more than 20 years, as a tutor and mentor. My profession and academic education was in business and psychology, but my passion has always been working with children. For the last 7 years, I have worked as a substitute teacher, for Lee County Schools. And for the last 5 years, I have spent my summer months traveling throughout SE Asia, volunteering time in orphanages and schools, teaching the children English.
My teaching style totally depends on the student(s) that I am working with. Not all children learn at the same pace, nor do they all have the same attention span. That said, I find that applying the “token economy” approach, in getting the children to focus on the task, is very effective. If given time and patience, children are capable of accomplishing most anything.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching experience has been both formal and informal. I’ve been a teaching assistant to college undergraduates, an instructor in management studies and also an instructor for dog obedience classes (you’re really teaching the owner, not the dog). My informal experience has been with my kids, helping them with homework and as a scout den leader and a coach for baseball and softball, and now with my grandkids. In my professional life, I brought new products and services to market which involved educating and orienting individuals and groups through demonstrating and teaching opportunities.
My teaching style is best described as adaptive. We all learn differently, some more so by doing, others by seeing or listening, and others by thinking it through. Learning is a combination of processes, emphasizing what works best. For me, the approach is to use what works best for ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I feel that I am a natural educator. I often find my self teaching people simple tasks at work, or being called upon by friends and family members to assist them, or their children with their homework. I like to keep learning fun and interesting for all students. I believe that if you invoke an emotional response, like happiness, when you are teaching something, the pupil is much more likely to retain the information.
All through high school and college I was a tutor. I have taken numerous writing extensive courses. This qualifies me to tutor English. I have also taken many courses that concentrated on Social Studies. Science was always one of my favorite courses in high school, therefore I took a few science courses in college as well. I have previously tutored students in test preparation, and I have taken the FCAT myself. Math was another strong subject of mine, and I have also ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I think the biggest part of getting children to understand what they need to know is relating to something that they like. For example, if a child likes basketball then you can relate counting and math to how the players score points in a basketball game. I think it is important to be patient and get to know the children in order to teach them effectively. I also think that making learning fun and inventive is an effective way of teaching.
When I graduated from high school, I went to college and completed my AA degree. I wanted out of college and immediately started working and making money. Eventually I realized how much I wanted to further my degree so I returned and I completed my bachelor's degree in two and a half years. It was the best choice I have ever made. I have since worked in private schools for the past seven years in Development and Fundraising and I am currently ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have many years experience working with, tutoring, and advising children and young adults. I believe that children are very individual in their learning capabilities and can reach their fullest potential if they are given an appropriate and supportive environment to learn.
I graduated with a BS degree from the University of Pittsburgh, majoring in Psychology with a minor in Sociology. In the last year I have started tutoring children, mainly in elementary school subjects. Throughout my work history, I have had many opportunities to work with and advise children and young adults through my positions as a case worker, a tutor, and volunteer mentor. I currently work as a financial representative, where my primary focus is to complete a current financial analysis for new clients and help them develop a personal financial plan to meet their goals and objectives.
