I believe that information accessibility should be emphasized and placed in bold. I would consider my style personable, compassionate, and driven to excel. I like to bring humor and discussion into the arena. If it's just me talking, how does it benefit the student if they do not feel they have the ability to rebut or 'think out loud?' New ideas and processes of interpretation are enabled in both the student and the teacher through a live and ever-changing dialogue. I realize that in the 'classroom proper' not everyone will have the 'eureka' experience. That is why the teacher must enable the students to make the connections themselves through collaboration, small projects, various 'out-of-the-classroom events/activities, and self-motivated inquiries. Once the information has been perceived by the student as important, he/she will want more to do with it. The information age has brought ... read more

Teaching to me is about relating the information to the students in a way they can understand. It is very important to make the material relevant to their lives somehow. Therefore it is important to get to know your students and their hobbies and interests. Another key thing needed to teach is patience. You cannot expect them to race through anything. Everyone has their own pace. It is also important to make the information interesting and entertaining to some extent, Especially for younger students. Sometimes an educational game is just as good at getting the information across but at the same time engages the students and keeps them interested.
I have been tutoring since I was 13 years old. Parents of my peers always approached me to teach their son or daughter. After I completed high school with a 4.0 GPA I was hired at a professional tutoring school. There I worked fo ... read more

I enjoy working with children of all age ranges, and it is my personal goal to make learning a difficult subject less of a chore. I believe that having extra help can make a world of difference in academic success and increase the overall confidence and attitude in a child, as I am very aware myself, having had math tutors when I was in high school. My ambition as a tutor is to give your child the same enjoyment that I experienced in learning Chemistry and English. I am patient and dedicated and I strive for excellence—in my tutoring style I am open and willing to use different approaches to teach if needed. I ask questions and also try to tutor with a similar style to the student's teacher, which can be a critical tool during test taking.

My previous teaching experience and training qualify me to provide outstanding service to students in this community. The rigorous academic curriculum I completed as an English major and Chemistry minor at Duke University cultivated study skills and learning strategies that helped me to excel. As a Phi Beta Kappa graduate, I not only applied these strategies to achieve personal success, but also volunteered to tutor elementary and middle school students with America Reads and at the Kings Park Life Center. As a Math Understanding through the Science of Life (MUSCLE) teaching fellow, I taught innovative science lessons to middle school students and received training about the unique styles of learners. The best way to describe my teaching style is to find a creative way to remember material. For example, I have a child that had to memorize his prepositions. We made up a song that included them all, in order. It turned out to something like this....ABOARD a ship AS we were traveling ABOUT eight knots, etc. This style was very effective for memorizing. For subjects that require more understanding than memorizing, I prefer my "teach and try" method. This means that I go through multiple problems with a student explaining the steps involved. Then, I set-up a mock test to test their abilities solo. I therefore can grasp their understanding and pinpoint their weaknesses.
I have recently graduated from North Carolina State University with a BS in Biological Sciences with a minor in Genetics. During college, I taught/tutored 7th graders at a local middle school in the areas of math and s ... read more
