My comments on tutoring Florida Writes : For the past 5 years I have worked with 4th grade students in school classrooms as well as tutored for FCAT Writes test. I have many tips and techniques to use when tutoring a student in writing.

As an English major in Education at the University of Alabama, I took many specialized courses in writing and reading. I learned many techniques for teaching creative writing and reading comprehension skills. For the past five years I have tutored students in FCAT writes techniques, reading skills and comprehension, and basic mathematics. In my position of Title I teaching assistant I taught small groups (6 or less students) and one-on-one reading, phonics, and comprehension as well as creative writing.
I absolutely love teaching and working with children. Children learn in unique and individual ways and sometimes struggle in school work because they learn at a different pace than the class as a whole. Individual and small group instruction greatly benefits these children in many ways. They have a chance to ask questions, to deal with specific areas of difficulty and to ha ... read more

Although I have never tutored professionally, I have had extensive experience tutoring friends and family in need. I am experienced in tutoring young children as well as classroom peers at my level. I have two bachelor degrees from UCF, Bio-medical Science and Psychology, and I feel confident in my ability to help anyone learn. I'm looking to earn extra money while completing my Master's degree at UCF.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that authenticity is the key to relating to people--especically children. Children are drawn to me because they sense my kindness and compassion. Equally important is my belief that evereyone learns differently. There is no right or wrong way to learn. A "slow" learner is not "stupid" or deficient in any way. They just have to be accomodating in an alternative manner. I believe that a teacher must adapt to the child's style of learning. Demonstrating to a child that you believe in them can be the most powerful teaching tool there is.
I have always been a creative thinker. This lead me to have a variety of career choices and intrests. I have a bachelor degree in communications, and will have my Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling in the fall of 2010. I also have been published in the Chicago Tribune in the Women's section on two occasions. I have also honed my w ... read more

I am a great believer in Learning Styles instruction and try to approach each student with the understanding that students learn in so many different ways there is no "right" approach to instruction. I try to maintain an "approachable" manner because I know that stress interferes with learning. I also have worked with a very diverse student body so I am very comfortable instructing students for whom English is not their first language.
During my tenure as a Title 1 Reading Instructor I served students with reading difficulties. I was instrumental in developing curriculum which aligned with the Massachusetts Frameworks. In addition to my Mater's Degree, I kept my teaching practice current by enrolling in the prestigious New Hampshire Writing Program and in the LINKS Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum Program. Since my retirement in 2006, I have served as a tutor in the Middl ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching for 5 years in a private school. It was a great introduction for me in so many ways. Not only did I experience teaching large classrooms but also smaller ones. I also learned a great deal from my colleagues and I'm always looking to improve myself. I taught Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts and Life Skills. In preparing my lessons I utilized media and technology as well as developed learning centers in the classroom to make it exciting for my students. I also incorporated theatre/drama into specific lessons to motivate the child and keep them interested. My goal was to make the best learning environment each and every day.
I approach each day with enthusiasm because I believe it's contagious. My greatest strength lies in the fact that I am a good communicator and I am always looking to develop myself as an instructor. In the first few weeks, w ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I subscribe to a comprehensive overview initially to provide a basic structural outline of course content and criteria for learning goals. Students can then "fill in" this overview outline as new content is introduced, with open discussion and query to gain additional insights. Daily affirmation of progress with focused discussion addressing areas of needing improvement to keep engaged with consistent monitoring. Assessments should be brief with subsequent feedback soon after testing. Keeping within the overview outline while working each course section will serve to assist in learning comprehension and retention while developing a long term knowledge of the overall course curriculum.
At Miami Dade College ADA services, I tutored learning disabled college students in areas of algebra, social sciences, biology, English writing and comprehension for (2) years. As an administrative ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a strong believer than learning should be fun. I enjoy working with children and work to serve as a mentor and role-model for them. I try to discover how the student learns the best and tailor tutoring sessions to the their needs. I strive to make the session fun by giving the student information in ways they are familiar with or can understand, i.e., using sports, music or other interests as examples. The student's success is the most important thing.

For five years I taught swimming lessons. While swimming isnotan academic subject, this experience taught me the essentials of teaching. I worked with a large range of ages, from six months to sixty years. While in college I was a tutor/editor in the writing center all three years. Upon graduation I took two part time jobs tutoring English at elementary and secondary levels, at Knowledge Points of Tampa Bay and Lindamood- Bell learning processes of South Tampa.
I rely heavily on Socratic questioning, to strengthen the students own thinking; my goal is for him/her to not need me. I use symbol and concept imagery language to ensure the student is not simply repeating, but seeing and understanding. Learning, especially at the lower levels, need not be boring, and I enjoy teaching through games, and in counter culture environments such as reading on bean bags or under a tree. I do not have a particular teaching style. I am trained to teach different styles, but it is my goal to get to know every child as an individual and figure out the best way for that child to learn. I also realize one type of style may not be the best for every subject matter. After having 3 children of my own, I can say without a doubt that every child is different and what may work for one will not work for the other. Unfortunately, teachers today have class sizes that are to big to take the needed time to work with students individually and learn what each student in their class needs as individuals.
Ever since I was in sixth grade, I have had opportunities to help children learn and see the benefits first hand from what I taught them. When I graduated from high school, I followed a different career path, but after a terrible car accident that left me unable to fly airplanes, ... read more

My belief is that all students want to learn. We as teachers must find the way they need to learn. I truly love to teach. I try to relate to the whole child and find which learning style meets his or her needs. I am extremely proud of the response I have received over the pass 20 years.
I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. I started teaching in the fall of 1985 in Tampa. After that first year I moved and I taught a few years in Ohio. In 1989 I moved to Brevard County and worked as an elementary school teacher. I received my degree in Educational Leadership in 1996. I now tutor and work part time with small groups.
