Math is a language. And because it is a language you do not use everyday, learning math can be particularly emotional. Therefore, I think two things are critical: a) that the student realizes that he/she can do it; and b) that the tutor reads the student accurately. When you see during a session that the student does not understand the material, you have to either: a) explain it in different terms; or b) break it down further.
