Experience Summary
I have extensive teaching experience. Currently, I tutor math through pre-calculus, and previously I taught computers (hardware, software and web). I have earned both a BS in Electronic Engineering Technology and an MS in Electrical Engineering. These degrees have taught me math and problem solving skills. These skills give one a confidence not only in, but also beyond the classroom. The ability to look at a problem and formulate some kind of solution will help any student in their future endeavors.
Teaching Style
Math is a language. And because it is a language you do not use everyday, learning math can be particularly emotional. Therefore, I think two things are critical: a) that the student realizes that he/she can do it; and b) that the tutor reads the student accurately. When you see during a session that the student does not understand the material, you have to either: a) explain it in different terms; or b) break it down further. Your job is not done until that student can explain (with confidence) to you what they are doing. One of the greatest pleasures in tutoring is watching a student gain confidence. “This math is kinda cool” is a pleasure to hear as it means we have achieved our goal.
