ADD/ADHD is one of my top subjects! I am a credentialed school psychologist and have worked with ADHD students for many years.

I am very aware of the necessity of adapting my teaching style to the learning modality of those I am working with. As an educator I evaluated students to define how they best process information. They may be auditory learners, visual learners or they may use a combination approaches. I am very patient and understand that everyone can learn. I believe in setting goals and evaluating progress to establish new goals when necessary.

I first find out your true objective for learning the material. Is it a requirement and not in your field of study so you just want to pass the class or is this a part of your passion or career and really want to know the nuts and bolts of the subject. I can read about it, or hear a lecture about it, but seeing it helps me understand the subject. This type of teaching would be done with movies, drawing or acting out the situation. In my teaching, I try to use all methods available to me to help the students learn and to use their creativity. I especially try to get students to work in groups and to share their work with each other. I find that pier groups provide the best help in understanding the subject matter. I spent 2 years tutoring Math for the students in my Mothers classroom afterschool (4th grade). I spent one year in college working with special needs students from the local elementary school, which included writing lesson plans and executing activities in group form. I taught one year of 7th grade Health and Physical Education. I tutored all the students at the end of the year to help them achieve passing scores on End Of Grade testing.
I do not like to teach out of textbooks. I use them primarily as resources. I prefer to create a lesson or activity that plays to the strengths of the individual child/student and challenges them on their particular level. I have found interactive lessons are very effective for all age ranges.
