Learning Can be Fun!

I have tutored children in group and individual piano lessons. I have tutored them in math and social studies. I have spent over 20 years in business in the accounting field and prepared countless financial statements and income tax returns. I am skilled in all things mathematical. I also speak Spanish through over 9 years of instruction.
I like to allow the student to read the material once and clarity any areas that need more explanation. Then I will allow them to answer questions from the material read and help them where needed to choose the correct answer and understand the reason for the answers. I like to reward a certain level of correct answers with points that can be redeemed for interesting small prizes. I also consider myself very patient and interested in the student having a strong foundation for future learning.

Students much be allowed to have a certain freedom to choose likes and strengths as well as weaknesses. We all have them! I believe in the "learning-centered" approach, which says that individual learners are empowered to direct and control their own learning experiences, with teachers/tutors only facilitating that process. With myself as an example, in my first two-three years of college, I didn’t buy the books recommended for my classes and managed to get by with B’s and C’s. In my last year or so, wanting to go to graduate school, I bought the books, read the assignments, and was amazed at how much easier the tests became when I was prepared. As a college professor, I could see which students had prepared and which ones, complaining that tests were "too hard", were those who had waited until the last minute to read the assignment or study for the test.
