Organic Chemistry is one of my top subjects! I received my BS in chemistry and my MS, Ph.D, and post-doctoral education in organic chemistry. Since 1998, my academic career has allowed me to teach chemistry to a wide variety of audiences, from high school students to assistant professors. During my tutoring sessions, I have noticed that assessing the student’s preference of learning is of upmost importance. This basic inquiry then allows me to tailor the session to their specific needs. Typically, I make use of everyday objects to help facilitate the student’s comprehension of the course material.

I have discovered over my teaching tenure that it is not that students don’t understand organic chemistry, it is that they believe this is the case; many have bought into the myths that circulate about organic chemistry around the academic environments. From my own experience, I have yet to have a tutoring session where the student has not grasped the concepts within the first 5 minutes of a session. It is just a matter of recontextualizing the subject matter in a more friendly and digestible manner so the students can incorporate it into their language and style of learning.
My name is Jason Dinsmore and I am the creator of Organic Chemist On Call (OrganicChemistOnCall.com). I first began teaching chemistry in 1998, and I have been doing so ever since. I decided to create this online and in-person tutoring service in October of 2011 in order to provide students with help in organi ... read more

As a tutor, I try to identify the learning strategies of my students and then build off of those. For example, if I notice that a student is a visual learner, then I will try to incorporate diagrams, models, and schematics that can assist the student in understanding the subject matter or solving the problem. If, on the other hand, a student learns best by reading, then I will provide step by step instructions of how to find answers to various problems, or provide guidance as to how to identify important elements from a text. In any event, I try to show students several different strategies for learning or for approaching a given problem and let them determine which one makes the best sense to them.
During my doctoral studies at UCSD, I began to tutor professionally as a way to earn extra income. It seemed like a logical choice for a part-time job as I had been helping friends ... read more

I began 'teaching' as the head wakeboarding instructor at Coble Ski School in Lillington, NC, when I was a junior in high school. Shortly thereafter I took a position working at a beach resort in Pensacola, FL, where I spent an entire summer instructing surfing, kayaking and sailing. At Duke I tutored during each of my four years, either biweekly at a local Durham elementary school or at the Emily K Family Life Center. It is there where I tutored once weekly as a senior, up until I graduated in May. I have tutored in all subjects and all ages up through 22.
When I approach a student I've never worked with, my first priority is to make them feel comfortable by letting them see that I am a very nice, friendly, and compassionate person that they might like to have as a friend. Next I try to get them to tell me about themselves in some way (what they've been working on, their fav ... read more

I have always known that I enjoy teaching others. In fact, I started teaching others almost as soon as I finished myself. While my degree is in Environmental Science, I have extensive background in both biology and chemistry. I was a peer leader and tutor for organic chemistry. Furthermore, I currently work for Duke University as a laboratory manager. One of my key responsibility is teaching undergraduate students various techniques in micro-biology and biochemistry.
I have several teaching styles, and I typically adjust my style to better fit the student. For those students that crave discipline, I try to be very proactive and actively assign homework for them to finish prior to learning. For those students who have better self control, I try to stand back a little bit to let them develop their own creativity. Regardless of the teaching styles I may use, I am always accessible and ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Since I am an engineering student, I have always been interested and excelled in math and science, so I have tutored many kids in all areas of science and mathematics. I have also tutored in Spanish and French. Last year, I worked with a young man who had dyslexia. I have helped kids of all ages, whether at the elementary, high school, or collegiate level.
I am a very patient person, a trait which I believe is very beneficial for a tutor to possess. I am always patient when teaching, and in doing so have succeeded in getting my point across. I like to pass on small tricks and acronyms that I have came up with for many things, some of which I have still retained to this day for my own personal use, not just for school work.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have recently graduated from the University of Richmond with a degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I am looking forward to helping others expand their knowledge in the area of science. I have tutored high school students in chemistry and biology, and have gain knowledge of both fields through my degree in biochemistry, enabling me to be versatile in subject matter.
I am a very energetic person and try to bring that to everything that I do. I am also very concerned with providing students with an understanding of the concept behind what they are learning and what the real-world applications of those concepts are. I feel that it is the key to engage students by making them see the benefits of their education in the long run.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have graduated from North Carolina State University and earned a bachelors degree in Chemistry. While studying I have learned math and science as my forte but have also taken English, Spanish and history courses. I have written many reports in both my major classes and outside of them. I have been involved in many programs that help enhance children learning. I have worked diligently in the community specifically with underprivileged children to give them hope and show them that if they can believe it they can achieve it!
I love working with all children. I enjoy changing my style to fit the specific need of the child and helping them in the way they learn the best. I want to be able to help them learn to become independent problem solvers. I want to help them become an asset to the team even when they are in the classroom and I am not there to coach them through that prob ... read more

My experience with learners, has taught me that success begins with an engaged learner. To engage learners, I help them to identify learning goals and factors that motivate them to pursue these goals. I also help them to understand how their academic pursuits relate to current and future life experiences. Once engaged, I draw from each learner's unique style to achieve success. To discover a learner's style, I utilize creative methods of explaining and exploring concepts. I am very enthusiastic and strive to make learning an enjoyable and rewarding experience. I take personal responsibility for the success of my learners and feel that if I have done my job properly they are guaranteed desirable results. My teaching style is a mixture of direct instruction and discovery based learning whose components depend on the student(s) at hand. I've been known to make generalized lesson plans and improvise as I go, because every class is different, and too strict of a plan is destructive and boring for the students. Students typically need things explained to them in many different ways to garner a solid understanding of any topic, but especially upper level math and physics. Therefore, I pride myself on using any props, explanations, or examples that I can come up with to get the point across. At the same time, I tailor each lesson to the speed of the student(s) and the time constraints of the situation, varying the amount of direct vs. discovery learning accordingly, and making sure that the lines of communication between myself and the student are wide open so I can continually assess their ... read more

Teaching prospective dental school applicants how to master this standardized test involves teaching not only test taking strategies, but also the mastery of large volumes of information. The DAT tests knowledge in the following areas: biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, reading comprehension, and mathematics. Apart from a sound base of knowledge in the sciences, I am also skilled in writing and grammar. I have either personally, or on behalf of others, researched, written, edited, and reviewed papers from a wide variety of academic disciplines ranging from Art History papers to Chemistry Lab reports. Learning is an incredibly individual phenomenon. I believe patience and creativity are essential to helping children learn. A concept can be explained in many different ways and modalities and the key is to find which styles of learning are best suited to your child. With support and encouragement, I will help your child gain confidence by building upon their strengths and by presenting topics with which they have more difficulty in a way that best complements the way in which they learn.
As the oldest of three children, I have informally tutored for many years. While pursuing my undergraduate degree, I worked with a community college student and aided him in passing his Algebra course. My interests in education are diverse. I have a liberal arts degree which drew heavily upon my writing skills. Additionally, I was completing my prerequisites for medical school which require ... read more
