A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked as a substitute teacher in a wide variety of subject areas, and have volunteered as a tutor for some time. However, since beginning a PhD program at UF I have done neither. Though most substitutes are not much more than babysitters, I attempted to teach whatever subject matter was before the students. I regularly heard from students that they understood my way of explaining something better than they understood their regular teacher (though this by no means happened in every class). This happened most often in math and history courses. In my work as a lawyer (I was an assistant district attorney between law school and the PhD program) I honed my conciseness skills. I enjoy helping others understand concepts that they are struggling with. It is very gratifying when a student has that "a ha" moment. I am a little strict with instruction. If a student is not paying attention or has not completed an assignment that I've asked him/her to do, I will not overlook it. A Little Bit About Me...

When I begin tutoring a new student, my first objective is for us to get to know each other. The student will not be able to receive very much from me until he/she is comfortable with me. Once they feel that I care, they open up and the learning really begins! When I really get a feel for the personality and whatever particular challenges are unique for this person in this class, I am able to determine the best way to communicate the subject and improve the skills.
