As a graduate of a private liberal arts college, I was educated in English and multi-cultural literature. As a reflection of what I was learning, I became interested in participating in the literary tradition, and began to take creative writing very seriously. I developed a passion for both poetry and literature and wish to share it with my students. I have tutored English, writing, history, ecology, and screenwriting. My passion for language and literature drives my desire to teach; I love to share everything from a basic grammar lesson to an in-depth, critical exegesis of a foreign novel. I strive to provide an individual-based educational experience for each child. I draw on each student's strengths and weaknesses to tailor each lesson. I have always loved children and valued education. Growing up with a younger sister who suffered from learning disabilities, I acquired the patience and understanding that is necessary to work with children. In addition to a Bachelor's Degree in psychology, I have been a tutor for the past four years. I have tutored seventh grade up through college level coursework including, but not limited to, statistics, chemistry, algebra, psychology and history. I also have experience with children outside of tutoring, including working as an assistant teacher at a private nursery school and working for two years as a senior summer camp counselor. My extensive experience with children has led me to discover some essential principles to follow when working with a young population. Patience and consistent positive reinforcement are among the most important. In general, I do whatever it takes to motivate the child and instill in them a sense of worth and confidence. Every success and accomplishment is immediately rejoiced so that no matter what they are doing, the child can feel good about it. On the other hand, when a child gets stressed out or frustrated over difficult material, it is important to stop, talk it over to help them relax and get into a better state of mind, and then work with them until you find the most effective teaching modality for that particular material.
