Makes science and math easy to understand

I've been tutoring at a college level for over two and a half years. I aim to take the more complex material and make it super easy to comprehend. Students have very stressful lives on their own; learning needs to be made fun and engaging. I attempt to do just that. Personally, I struggled with math in high school, so I came up with fun, easy ways to remember what to do. Learning is a process, like any other. The most effective way to learn is to first start by figuring out how you learn as an individual and using specific techniques that will make information more meaningful to you. I'm very familiar with a vast array of these techniques, because I've tried them all on myself. I'll give you the tools to make the most out of you educational endeavors.
I'm a visual learner, but I incorporate several different teaching styles to make course material meaningful to the students I tutor ... read more

Teaching is the career that I have envisioned for myself since I was young. I have a passion for helping people, especially helping them learn. I am a very caring, respectful, and motivated person. Children learn in many different ways and may excel in different subjects than their peers. This means that the teacher or tutor must work to find the learning style that works for the student and build upon that. I am committed to taking into account the individuality of each student that I work with. In addition, I also strongly believe that incorporating real-world experiences and the use of artifacts and manipulatives greatly increase students’ understanding and motivation.

My teaching style is specific to the individual child and their needs. When I worked at the residential center, I had to teach alcohol and drug awareness classes. During that time is when I learned that encouragement, patience, and a variety of methods are essential to a child's academic success. A child looks to the teacher for the effective skills and tools to accomplish their dreams.
I have always felt compelled to help others achieve their dreams. I graduated with a bachelor's in psychology and began working at a residential alcohol and drug treatment facility for adolescents. There I assisted the education personnel in tutoring our clients. I helped our kids with math, science, and English, at all levels of education. My work experience in this position and in the positions that I was promoted to enhanced my writing skills, interpersonal relationships, and attention to ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching both school-age students and adults. I believe the three most important qualities a teacher can bring to a student are expert skills in the areas being taught, patience, and optimism. I truly believe all students can learn, and I provide a safe atmosphere that encourages risk-taking (the willingess to make mistakes for the benefit of learning), exploration and expansion of background knowledge, and the progressive acquisition of new material. With guidance, a student can construct knowledge and own it. This is far more important and complex than just imparting information. A good teacher can make all the difference in the success of a student.
My backgrounds in special education (BS), adult GED preparation, and nursing (AAS - RN) have helped me develop into a patient, skilled, and compassionate teacher/tutor. I have a strong instructional foundation in basic math, p ... read more

I believe learning is about confidence. I have seen numerous students doing poorly in courses because they were convinced that they were not capable of learning the subject matter. Small successes help to build confidence in order to move on to the subsequent challenges. I believe in starting with the basics, and making sure that the students truly grasps the subject matter before moving to more difficult concepts. Often, it takes several different approaches before a student is able to understand the concept. I believe that with patience, I can find the right approach and help most students perform at a higher level.
While completing my undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering at University of Idaho, I was often called upon to tutor people within the building where I lived during college. I also was employed by the University to grade papers and offer assistance to under ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

During my college years, while earning a degree in journalism, I tutored college-level English composition; this is when I first discovered the joy of helping someone learn something and “seeing the light come on” for them. I have spent the last twenty years of my professional career in not-for-profit work, almost entirely devoted to programs involving mentoring children. I believe that success in academics is the foundation for success in other areas in life for children and young people. I am a skilled writer and editor, but more importantly, I understand the importance of helping someone find their own skills and gifts; everyone has the potential to shape their own learning style, if given the direction and support to do so.
We are all individuals and as such will have our own, unique styles of learning. My job as a tutor/mentor/teacher is to uncover that and foster the ... read more

The teaching style that brings the best success I've found is centered on two points. First of all, it is based on listening, which means getting the student to talk. Eventually, with guidance, I aim to get them the ability to talk through and solve any problem. The second major technique I like to use is analogies. Even complicated subjects can be simplified into their core components which are easy to understand if taught as an analogy to something more familiar in daily life. Just as the Bible uses parables or employers use phrases from team sports to explain team roles, I find lots of success by using analogies.
My specialty is reading, writing and research. I have a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas, where I studied government, law and economics. I believe most students can learn or solve any problem by talking it through, which is often easier and mor ... read more

Since I earned my K-6 teaching license, I have worked with children in several different instructional/mentor/tutoring positions. I worked as a teaching assistant in Fifth Grade and First Grade. At the same time, I was also the Education Director for the local Boys and Girls Club. I have also subbed and worked as a tutor since March of 2009.
I enjoy teaching and working with elementary aged children. I love those moments when, after much effort, the light of understanding dawns in a student's eyes. When it comes to how children acquire knowledge, I believe it is very important to help them build new knowledge based upon their prior knowledge and experiences. I am aware of the different ways that children learn and attempt to structure my approach in tutoring to match those learning style differences. Finally, I believe that building a positive relationship with both the pupil an ... read more
