My approach is simple: assess the student's academic weaknesses, review the strengths, then teach the new material in order to bridge the content or skill. "Scaffolding" is the best means by which to teach so that the student understands the significance of the lesson. Too often, teachers play sage-on-stage, thereby neglecting to connect what the student already knows with the new material.
I am a credential-holding elementary school teacher with experience ranging from Kindergarten through 6th grade. I have years worth of both instructing large-scale classes as well as one-on-one tutoring. After graduating from UCLA in 2005 with a Bachelor's in English, I taught English composition, speaking, and grammar in Beijing, China for almost two years. Since that time, I have also tutored high school-aged students in the areas of critical reading of literary texts, essay writing techniques, as well as creative writing.
