I like students to be comfortable, enjoy their experiences with me as much as possible, and learn not only the material they need to study, but also habits and practices that will help them with future studies.

My experience of teaching the families from Brazil was very enjoyable. One high school student said that she learned more at our once a week class than she learned at her daily class in school. I liked incorporating songs and singing to reinforce grammar, which made class time fun. I emphasize conversational ESL and grammar practice. A Little Bit About Me...

Over the last 15 years, I have worked in various different areas. First, I taught adult ESL, and had occasional tutoring gigs with Russian speakers learning English, and some English speakers learning Russian. Currently, I work as a special education teacher. Part of my job is to work in small ratios with honors students who have disabilities. This "study skills" class often requires one-on-one tutoring.
As it has evolved over the years, my teaching style has become a mix of facilitation and direct instruction, with the goal always being the student's making his own discovery. I was trained in the Socratic style, which seems to match well with inquiry-based learning, and that is how my classes usually end up. I introduce activities, then gradually release them to the students to lead.

To prepare for my own exploration of the world, I studied zoology, chemistry, genetics, anatomy, and biology; these efforts resulted in three degrees: a BS, a MS, and a PhD. I believe that teaching is guided by the student. When the student shows that something is working we keep using it, if they don't like something we try something new. Everyone is different.
