I believe in the value of individualism and the student's unique gifts. However, how one would teach grammar is radically different from how one would teach drawing. With drawing, one teaches the method while encouraging individual creativity, maintaining a right-brained perspective; grammar and literature require a more rigorous approach since they are governed by rules and formulas, maintaing a left-brained standard. As a regular classroom teacher, I felt hampered due to class size. I was never satisfied connecting with just a few students. Every student was important to me. I realized that the only way for me to really reach students was by reducing the teacher-student ratio. As a tutor, I found that teaching smaller groups of students or one-on-one was for me. I believe that teaching is guided by the student. When the student shows that something is working we keep using it, if they don't like something we try something new. Everyone is different. Some people need more hands on, others need more example, and some people want the material to be life relevant so we do more conversation and real life stuff.
