A Little Bit About Me...

Being a CODA, child of deaf adults, has allowed me to be fluent in mine and my parent's native language of American Sign Language. Through my 13 years of professional work in the sign language field, I have tutored and taught sign language and have mainly worked as a sign language interpreter for the Deaf and hearing community. Currently and for all of my professional years of interpreting, I have worked in the educational setting interpreting for mainstreamed Deaf and hard of hearing students at both high school and college level. There are many things that I have to offer a student interested in learning sign, the language itself and also the culture associated with American Sign.
It is best to learn sign language in person. Signs are done from the hands and facial expressions and is best learned in person.

I've been doing sign language for 18 years, I have a brother and sister who are deaf and thats how I became skilled. I enjoy doing sign language and tutoring people who are willing to learn it. I've taught other family members,friends,even students from school. Whenever someone notices me doing sign language they always come near me and ask me to teach them. During my journey to complete my B.S. of Biology at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey I was inspired to help others educate themselves. I informally tutored my peers in biology and writing courses. I was recommended to become a writing tutor at this institution but was graduating too early to complete the required qualifying courses. I edited a plethora of biology lab reports as well as research papers for various majors. It's true that every student learns at a different pace with a different style. I like to see myself as a cameleon teacher, catering my format to individual needs. My style tends to be laid back so that students are comfortable expressing their likes and dislikes with me, curbing their fear of not understanding something. I love to use metaphors, pictures, examples and stories to illustrate the subject in a new and perhaps clearer way.
