Tutor - Writing, Reading, GED Prep

I worked for two years at the Cleveland State University Writing Center where I tutored writing and reading comprehension to undergraduate and graduate students of many academic backgrounds. I tutored students one-on-one and also taught writing workshops to groups of 3-6 students. In February of 2013, I began tutoring GED prep at Seeds of Literacy, an adult education organization in Cleveland. I am comfortable tutoring most topics covered on the test. If there is a topic I am unsure about, I will let you know up front. I am also certified to be a foster parent and subsequently possess well-rounded knowledge concerning the learning needs of children and young adults of varying abilities and learning styles.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching for 25 years. I have tutored students in beginning Spanish and reading. I have also taught Sunday School and have been a substitute teacher for 11 years. I have just completed student teaching to become an Intervention Specialist. I intend to be certified this spring.
I vary my teaching style. Some students are content with just reading while others need hands-on and visual experience. I believe in using technology, as the Smart Board and computer instruction in addition to textbook instruction. I do my best to keep the student's interest in mind, and I work at the student's pace. My philosophy is the student comes first.

I am forced to design creative solutions and think outside the box. I hold a 4 year BS and a 5 year Bachelor of Architecture, and I have tutored on and off over the years. I have also taught Sunday School for the last 3 years, which has increased my ability to explain complicated issues in simple, understandable, and relevant ways.
There is a way to reach every child. It is my responsibility to figure out how an individual child learns best, and then use it to show him learing is fun! I enjoy challenging a child to think - to think more creativly, tieing together concepts to gain understanding. I enjoy the individuality of each student. One student may learn best visually, while another through kinesetics, each a valid learning style. Once a child can find their style they can confidence in their ability to learn. I believe each child can learn I just need to help them find the confidence to do so. I listen to past successes the child tells me about to see how that intersects with learning styles. I believe patience, listening, and perseverance are the tools that help the teacher help the student best.

My teaching experience started teaching in a pre-school with 4 year olds. I then taught 3rd grade for 1 year and kindergarten for 9 years. When I updated my certificate (just in the last year) I did some teaching in a mildly handicapped resource room.
I feel my style of teaching is one of being a facilitator. I choose to interact with the student by asking questions so enabling them to reach the answer through their own thinking processes. The excitement of seeing their confidence build as they realize they can figure out problems independently is the reward of being an educator. I believe my job is to guide and support the student.

" The mediocre teacher tells, the good one explains, the superior one shows, and the great one inspires..." I will inspire, explain, and show... in that order. Regardless of age (my youngest student was 4 and my oldest was 65) I believe that motivation is the cornerstone of all great learning. In fact, teaching without true motivation and belief is just glorified babysitting. Through inspiration and my extensive knowledge in various areas, your loved one will succeed. It is inevitable.

I have a variety of experience. Most of my tutoring experience is with older students, aged 15 or older. However, I feel that I could work with younger kids as well. I love learning, and I get excited when a student fully grasps the material. I try and reinforce a teachers method of teaching. However, if repetition is not the issue, than I try and explain topics in different ways with lots of examples.I believe a tutor can really be a great supplement to the classroom teacher.

In my experience, a person needs to be confident in him/herself in order to succeed. Learning of scholastic material is two fold: personal and academic development. By understanding the manner in which the student comprehends new information, we then can build upon their foundation by removing the frustration and replacing it with confidence that will extend into their personal life as well.
As a bilingual, internationally traveled persona, I have tutored students of all ages. From 1999-2003, I have served as a third grade Teacher's Aide focusing on on reading, memorization and basic math tutoring. Since 1999, I also have tutored middle, high school, and college students in pre-algebra, algebra, geography, computer skills, writing, and grammar. My master's degree has trained me in learning techniques.
