I also am a strong believer of parental involvement. A parent knows their children's learning patterns best. I like to use different approaches. Algebraic concepts and formulas can often be, I have found, analogous to much simpler ideas or images. Once the abstract is related to the mundane, we can break down the barrier to understanding that can be an automatic or habitual construction for many people. My style is based on the fundamentals; you cannot progress unless the basics are understood. Only after understanding the basics can an individual move to a higher level of understanding. I am there to facilitate the basics so that we can move together in understanding more advanced concepts. Those students I had at Bryant & Stratton years ago applauded me for introducing them to the basic understanding of accounting.
