When I was senior high school student taking AP Biology, I tutored a freshman student and helped bring up her scores for her final exam. During my time studying at the New College of Florida, Florida's honors college, I took two semesters of a class in which I prepared and taught elementary, middle, and high school students various topics in science. As a condition of obtaining my bachelors degree for the honors program, I wrote a thesis entitled, "Photorespiration: A Wasteful Relic, or a Potentially Useful Metabolic Tool?". The best teaching style in my opinion, explains how to research, plan and write essays, gives students time to practice these skills in class, and ensures students get feedback on how well they have done on each sub-skill. Students learn skills by using them in a realistic, subject-specific context, and in a combined way. So they might use other skills taught before such as note taking, highlighting, all in context. The purpose of the skills are stressed, students are taught not just what to do and how, but also why. The students then reflect on how well they used the skills, what gains they were getting and so on, and then they action plan for improvement.

I prefer a “vertically integrated” teaching style. Science is a continuum, with complex topics being reducible to simple concepts. I will work with a student to break down difficult topics that are already problematic, and help them synthesize concepts into an integrated whole as new topics arise.
My education consists of a Bachelors of Arts degree in chemistry, with a minor in biology and significant field experience in academic research in both fields.
