Before earning a BA in Biology at Skidmore College and after graduating high school, I took three years off to play hockey. Concurrently, I enrolled in classes at Mount Wachusett Community College in Massachusetts and tutored in the math department. I tutored students in algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, and some calculus. At Skidmore I continued in math, taking calculus I, II, and III, and linear algebra before focusing my attention on molecular biology. My education consists of a Bachelors of Arts degree in chemistry, with a minor in biology and significant field experience in academic research in both fields. My inaugural teaching experience was as an HEOP tutor for introductory physics. I have been a freelance tutor for organic chemistry for over a year, and have tutored Regents chemistry as well, and have volunteered my services to fellow students for two and a half years.
I prefer a “vertically integrated” teaching style. Science is a continuum, with complex topics being reducible to simple concepts. I will work with a student to break down difficult topics that are already problematic, and help them synthesize concepts into an integrated whole as new topics arise.

Students learn skills by using them in a realistic, subject-specific context, and in a combined way. So they might use other skills taught before such as note taking, highlighting, all in context. The purpose of the skills are stressed, students are taught not just what to do and how, but also why. The students then reflect on how well they used the skills, what gains they were getting and so on, and then they action plan for improvement.
