sExprienced with learning disabilities

I have worked with developmentally disabled adults and children for over 15 years off and on. Having children and taking time off throughout the years. I love my work and everything to do with this type of work. I'm just interested in more of a personal level and more rewarding work. Being a tutor would without a doubt be amazing work.

I prefer to assertive in discipline but try to understand where children are coming from. I want children to learn above all else. I think that you need to be understanding but stern. I think that you need to be compassionate yet thorough.
I have been a preschool teacher for approximately 2 years in Head Start programs. I have substitute taught in the last year. I also was a early childhood special education paraprofessional for 1 year. I have also been a lead teacher in a learning center.

I develop most of my lesson plans using GLAD principles. I like to use multiple senses, student interaction and various resources to keep the student active. When teaching a language, it is important to know the basic grammar structure first, and then speaking and listening follow. I work with people with disabilities, teaching them how to canoe with a company called Wilderness Inquiry. The company's motto is: Anyone, anywhere, anytime, any place. We strive to make this possible, because it is possible! It is possible to have a quadriplegic go on a canoe trip or a blind person to kayak through caves. I have learned that anything is possible with adaptation. While teaching, a successful teacher can allow everyone to learn, with adaptation.
During my undergraduate career, there were multiple influences that contributed to my passion for teaching. First, I tutored college students fr ... read more

I have had extensive education in Math and Physics through college and graduate school. I worked as research scientist for 14 years after graduating from school. In the past seven years, I have been working with children with learning disabilities (autism, etc). I completed my graduate-level ABA course training in 2009, earning a certificate towards the national board certification as a Behavior Analyst. I am also a fluent speaker in Chinese.
I love teaching and working with all children, especially those facing challenges in learning. I believe all children can learn, but each in different ways. I have always enjoyed teaching. I love it when students have that moment when they finally get what you have been teaching them. I have taught a wide range of students, from Kindergarten thru 60 year-olds returning to college. I believe that the hands-on approach works best for most students, learning by applying their knowledge. I feel I have made a difference in the lives of students. I am patient and will continue going over information until the student has grasped it.
I am currently teaching part time at Globe University, I teach Business Math and Accounting. I enjoy helping my students learn new skills and strive to do their best as they achieve their educational goals. In addition, I have worked in the elementary school as a special education paraprofessional. I worked with four special needs children in the 4th grade. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in meeting each child at his/her current skill level and building confidence and concepts from there. Each student has his/her own strengths and weaknesses, and learns at his/her own pace. Rather than expecting all students to understand a concept using one teaching style, I teach a lesson using multiple modalities followed by step-by-step tasks which reward successive approximations to a concept. The students who catch on quickly can use the time to build on their skills and expand upon the concepts, while I work more closely with students struggling with the concepts presented. I do this because I care, and believe academic success and personal confidence are key to life success.
Ten years ago, at just 14, I knew I had a calling to help others reach full potential in all aspects of their lives, and did something about it. At that time, I implemented a scheduled and drop ... read more
