My preferred method of teaching is hands-on, through real experiments. Unfortunately, experiments cannot always be done, so I use lots of illustrations and age-appropriate analogies that are easy to relate to. Many times students are convinced that science is a subject too difficult to conquer, that they must just survive it, but science is all around us. I strive for that "a-ha" moment when a student realizes that all biological and physiological processes are interrelated and that the trick to understanding science is to build on previously learned concepts. I believe that teaching solid fundamentals and relating more difficult topics to already learned information is key to helping students thoroughly understand the subject. Tutoring is something I have enjoyed for the past 10 years. I started as a Supplemental Instructor for the University of Texas at Austin. I have tutored students in math courses with students ranging in skills. The youngest student was assisted in fourth grade math and the oldest in college math. Often times we create a barrier because something seems like it should be hard.
