Experience Summary
My wife and I home-schooled our three children from 1993 until 2004. In addition, I was active in Scouts from 1994 until 2007 as Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster and Merit Badge Counselor. These positions are supervisory in nature and involve both formal and informal teaching, mentoring and guiding. This experience also entailed several summer camps.
My strengths are in the natural sciences, which formed the bulk of my work at UT, and English composition and grammar, as I gained extensive experience proofreading and writing essays for publication.
Teaching Style
I typically employ the Socratic method: asking questions to discover what the student knows (or thinks he knows) and guiding his thinking toward discovering the knowledge himself.
Both my three children and my Scouts have declared that they enjoy my teaching because it engages their interest and because it is frequently humorous (when the subject and the occasions permits).
I really enjoy the company and conversation of young adults and find I often learn from them as they are learning from me. I also believe that the brain is like a muscle: the more it is exercised the stronger it gets.
