I am currently entering ASL 5 at college level, I am a member of the American Sign Language Honor Society, and have tutoring experience. I would say my teaching style is that everyone has the potential to improve and that everyone has the ability to learn. My mom and my step father are both deaf and my real father was hearing. So growing up I learned sign language along side with learning english. I have almost always interperted for my mother and step father in many situations. In American Sign Language I was raised learning English along with American Sign Language so I could speak to both of my parents. As my dad is hearing and my mother has been deaf since birth. Once my parents divorced I moved to Texas with my mother and step-dad, who is deaf as well. Being in an all deaf house American Sign Language was my only way of communcation with my parents. I have always been interested in American Sign Language. I took classes in high school and passed them with A's. Soon after graduating I decided to go to Palomar College and took ASL 3 and 4 and fell in love with the language even more so. After taking the Awareness of Deaf Culture class , I decided to pursue the major. I am currently an interpreting student and recently finished my first year of the ASL/ English Interpreting Program. I will be in Interpreting 3 in the Fall semester of 2015. After accessing the student's level of the language, I will provide tutoring services to teach ASL vocabulary, grammar and non manual markers including facial expression and mouth morphemes of the language. Two college semesters of ASL, taken with a deaf professor. I have also translated songs for a choir. Although I am not fluent in this language, it remains to be one of my absolute favorites. I have tutored many young students throughout my life, and have been tutored myself. I do find it easier to work with younger children; however, I am capable of assisting those of high school or college age students who are struggling. I have helped young children learn how to read, write, count, and tell time on an analog clock. I can teach children of all ages. I believe it is easiest to build rapport with the student before teaching them. If there is a good relationship between the student and teacher then it is easier to teach and learn. I use different styles of teaching that address all types of learners.
