Experience Summary
My employment with Los Angeles Community College District and Links Interpreting Agency has given me a substantial foundation on which to develop from. The topics and settings I have interpreted a range of classes such as: life modeling, architecture, math, documentary film class, astronomy, and English as a second language(ESL). My agency work includes settings such as: medical appointments, medical presentations, and k-12 classroom interpreting.
I received my training at California State University, Northridge under their prestigious Deaf Studies Department. I received my Bachelor of Arts Degree from this department with an emphasis in Interpreting. In order to accomplish this, I completed over 60 units of coursework relating to Deaf Studies, the Deaf community, and interpreting. I received my double major in Linguistics to further my knowledge and understanding of interpreting. I have a strong grasp on the language, culture, and history of Deaf community as a result of my training and involvement with the Deaf community.
In conjunction with my coursework, I was also fortunate enough to participate in an internship program on campus during my last semester as a student. I completed over 100 hours of internship work, which included observation, extensive note taking, and actual classroom interpreting experience. I also was able to form relationships with the working interpreters who became my mentors during this time. These mentors taught me skills that are invaluable to any new interpreter. As a student at California State University, Northridge I also attended numerous interpreting workshops, department related lectures, community events, and volunteer assignments such as Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, a wedding, conferences, a funeral, and a music video filming. My volunteer hours total to 200+ hours.
