Salut! I used both teacher-centered and student-centered styles because although coaching and facilitating a student in understanding the language, having the knowledge of which countries speak the language and the different terminology used by each countries can be a benefit to a student. I believe in interaction and practice of the language on the daily basis. It takes time to learn a new language but with practice, perfection follows. The Socratic method of teaching has been instilled in me as the most engaging and successful approach to learning. Through a series of deliberate, well-directed, leading questions from a tutor, the student arrives at the "answer" through his or her own reasoning process, as opposed to getting the answer through a tutor spitting out information. This approach builds confidence in the student, rather than dependence on the tutor, as the student receives a model of the learning process that they will ultimately be able to implement themselves. My teaching style is clay. It molds itself to fit individual needs. For example, some students need visual aids and some need verbal. Sometimes even these change. It's fun to work with special needs children because their thinking and learning styles are so unique. You can virtually see their minds working in interesting fashions. Hands on is another key I employ. For example if I want teach someone a software program I will have them drive while I guide them. Another factor is getting to know the student and gaining trust.
