While I was in high school, I took honors courses and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. I tutored an 8th grade-9th grade boy in TCAPS preparation and helped him complete homework in Math (pre-algebra, algebra, and pre-geometry), Science (biology), and English. I tutored him for two years. After I graduated high school I was accepted to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where I am currently in the spring semester of my sophomore year. I will be returning to Johnson City this summer and am available to tutor. I have a BS in Biology and Genetics from North Carolina State University. I have recently taken a refresher course in Anatomy and Physiology to go back to school for radiology. I have taken college level math courses through Calculus II, I have taken General Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, and multiple courses in Genetics. I have helped tutor in high school for the Chemistry AP exam and helped fellow students in college. I believe in being hands on and visual, many students have problems in math and science because they are unable to visualize the words written in their books. I have worked with different levels of mental health and emotional maturity for several years. I have spent much of my spare time working within the community at youth centers, soup kitchens and veteran administration homes. I enjoy working with students to help them understand biology and how they participate in a biological world. I believe that the most important concept in teaching is engagement with the student. I strive to engage students in biology by exploring how biological concepts relate to the students life. Genetic diseases, growth and development, and the environment are biological topics that students already participate in; and I strive to teach by relating these topics to the student’s own life. For the last two years I have taught college level biology labs. These have been introductory biology classes with course material beginning with cell biology and ending with ecology. I love sharing my passion of science and learning! I tend to break down complex concepts into simple, more manageable components, by utilizing interesting analogies and easily understood associations before moving on to more complex subjects. I firmly believe that doing well in science or math requires comprehension, rather than just memorizing material for a test.
