A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked quite a lot with elementary school children, whether it be in or outside of work. I have done independent tutor work, mainly in the fields of Art and Language Arts. In the past I had a long-term job in which I was required to interact with young children, and I did so willingly. For two years in a row, I taught a Beginner's Guitar course for children and the feedback I received was overwhelmingly positive. I use a variety of teaching styles while instructing students. Alternating between styles helps to keep minds engaged and participation at a maximum. When covering content I use many examples that relate to real life, that way students can relate it to something they have experienced or seen. I also like performing small-scale experiments and labs. I will use power point presentations as well as the overhead for drawings, notes, and discussion. A Little Bit About Me...

I went to public schools in East Detroit, Michigan. In eighth grade I set a personal goal to attend the University of Michigan. I never had private tutors. My strongest subject is math. Mr Learmont, my junior high school history teacher would frequently say, "Take care of these books and these books will take care of you." It was that inspiration that raised me to love learning and in turn teaching others.

I've always enjoyed the art of communicating complicated material to those who are just learing or don't quite "get it". My focus is to break things down into basic elements and achieve agreement. Then, support learning with repetition. For example: "Would you agree that if we add 5 and 5 and then another 5 that we would end up at 15?" "So, then, 5 added together three times equals 15, right?" I'm also a big fan of mindmapping for education, so I tend to use it when I lecture at college, and I encourage my students to use it as a visual recall tool.

I tutored with the Writing Fellows every Thursday at Schoolcraft College when I was working towards my Associate's in Liberal Arts. I helped students write and edit their papers. The primary focus was English but there were a few Social Studies/History students thrown in there. I graduated in April 2009 from Eastern Michigan University with my Bachelor's Degree in Electronic Media and Film with a Minor in Creative Writing.
I would usually look the paper over and point out problems with grammar and spelling and tell the student why they weren't working. I believe in the mantra "show, don't tell" when it comes to teaching. I'm pretty laid back and willing to work at whatever pace the student is comfortable with. I don't move on until I feel both of us are on the same page. I think the history of the English language has a lot of really interesting trivia.
