A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught grade three for four years. I have taught fifth grade for five years. I have worked as a special education teacher in a moderate-to-severe special day class for two years. I have substitute taught for two years in grades k-12. I am currently an adjunct ESL teacher for a junior college and have taught pre-level I for two years and levels I and II for two years. I believe in motivating children to be self learners through independent discovery. A Little Bit About Me...

I taught in private schools in California for 15 years ( 1980-1994). I started as a teacher, then became a Media Specialist, then a Vice Principal and finally a principal. I moved to Indiana in 1994, where I taught in public school for 3 years. We moved back to California in 2000. Since that time I have served as a Library Media Specialist and Reading Teacher. Presently I teach reading fundamentals to small groups of students from 2nd through 6th grades.Additionally, I am a writer, and have published numerous stories and articles, and one full length book of fiction.
I believe in using the differentiated approach to teaching--based upon the seven intelligences. I plan for all lessons being taught, and state the objectives on the board for each lesson. I present the lesson, allowing the students to interact and respond by activating prior knowledge, discussing points and inviting t ... read more

I don't think there is a better feeling then to see a student be proud they were able master something they thought impossible. If I had to say what method I used to teach students, I would have to say that every student is different, and that what works for one may not work for the other. I would say my approach would be to first understand what may be causing them to struggle, then working from there to teach them to be confident in their ability, and providing the appropriate tools needed to succeed.

Through my education at UCLA, I developed a solid foundation in math and science, while completing my BS in Bioengineering. Additionally, I have well developed communication and grammar skills for an engineer due to several extracurricular activities, which required me to write time-sensitive documentation and reports. My tutoring experience comes from 2 years of volunteer work I did at Marina Del Rey Middle School.
My dominant teaching style is connecting with students on a personal level. During my time as a mentor at Marina Del Rey, I enjoyed developing a relationship with my mentee inside and outside of the classroom, and I truly believe this helped him excel. I like to take a firm, but fun approach to tutoring, and I always challenge my students to try their hardest to complete a problem and not automatically defer to receiving help from the tutor. Patience and student em ... read more

I started teaching Sunday School when I was in Junior High. I taught a little boy in my class how to read and it was the most rewarding experience I have ever encountered. As aforementioned, throughout high school, I began tutoring students in Math, English, Spanish, Science, and History. I tutored one 6th grade student who was ADHD. He had several tutors before me, but none had the patience to work with him. I started tutoring him and fell in love with this particular child. It was hard at first because everything distracted him, but I tried different approaches until he finally began to understand the material. I created a safe environment, which is the framework for teaching. I respected this student, and in return, he respected me. We would take little breaks between each assignment, which helped him return refreshed. He was interested in learning because I used specific ex ... read more

During my last four years I have been given several opportunities to interact and educate students of all ages. Working with the Upward Bound Program I tutored high school students in various subjects. As a varsity basketball player I was frequently in charge of teaching the sport's fundamental skills necessary to younger children. While this kind of education differs from one received in the classroom, I believe that the objective is similar in that students are being taught essential elements of a subject. My bachelors degree in Biology and minor in Chemistry give me adequate knowledge on the material and my grammatical skills have been shaped by the numerous research papers and reports I have written.
I thoroughly enjoy working and education children. Whether it is on the basketball court or in the classroom, teaching children how to succeed and learn has always been a passion o ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I first discovered my love for teaching in high school. I excelled in many areas and helped my fellow students learn. As I furthered my education, my passion for teaching grew and my style changed. I have molded my favorite, and most effective, professor's techniques into my own hybrid. I use humor and compassion to develop the student's understanding. I try to teach to the student and not at them. I teach study habits that will help them learn more effectively on their own.
I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Chemisty with a minor in statistics. As an undergraduate, I tutored middle-schoolers in science and math as a volunteer at a local school. I was recently a substitute teacher, teaching all ages and in areas such as the biological sciences, algebra, calculus and psychology. I currently tutor a college student in mathemtics.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that every child deserves an equal opportunity at receiving a good education. Although each child may pursue differnet educational opportunities in later years, I believe that there is a core body of knowledge, presented to us in the curriculum, that each can and should be exposed to while they are in the lower. However, I realize that all children do not learn new concepts and strategies by the same methods or at the same rate as one another. For that reason, I support the use of differentiated instruction as a means to effectively communicate that knowledge. I see no better opportunity to implement differentiated instruction, aside from regular classroom instruction, than through tutoring.
