When presented with an assignment, I ask my tutee to read the directions of the assignment and to relay them back in his/her own words. I ask which aspects are clear and which aspects are troubling. While much can be gained from looking at previous evaluations and test scores, I think that it is crucial to let the student express their needs to make them feel comfortable and build a commitment to the teaching program. In individual sessions, I feel that allowing the student to discuss concepts out loud in addition to completing written exercises and preparing questions facilitates the learning process. I also find that real world analogies are useful ways of linking academic information to previously learned concepts and facilitate the student's understanding. A Little Bit About Me...

In Medical School, Residency and practice I have always been expected to be in the simultaneous role of student, teacher, mentor and tutor. I can say I have a vast amount of training and expereience in science, physics, chemistry, mathematics, as well as the liberal arts. I score as an ITSP on the Myers-Briggs evaluation which means I am not only concrete in speech and utilitarian in getting things done, I am also directive and attentive in teaching settings.
