I began playing piano at the age of 5. At 13 I started teaching piano in Hawaii Kai at the request of neighbors and the business has continued all these years. One of my former students is a police office now, one is a prosecuting attorney, one sailed on the Hokulea. I have great pride in feeling that my small role as a teacher helped steer them towards a successful career. We all know that music instruction helps students do better at school. Some of the most sought after surgeons in Hawaii are classically trained concert pianists. Students don't need to invest in a piano, a keyboard from Costco does just fine. I use a basic piano method (or books you may have on hand from previous lessons) and supplement the lesson with music of your choosing: show tunes, tv themes, you name it. English is one of my top subjects! As English was my major in undergraduate and post graduate work, I am at ease with any aspect of the subject. I have taught English and its various components at public and private schools, from elementary to college level. I have also instructed students in verbal SAT prep for many years. In addition to enjoying all aspects of writing instruction, I find "teaching" reading just as stimulating. Students often have a hard time with assigned reading as they haven't found the tools to de-mystify the material. By preparing them properly before each assignment, the material becomes more friendly. I have them search for several clues to the gist of the subject before embarking on the reading itself. This lays the groundwork for better understanding.

I have taught over 20 years in private & public schools in Hawaii & one summer in Michigan. My experience ranges from elementary to college level. I have also tutored SAT prep in English and math and instructed English As a Second Language for Hawaii Pacific University in their summer exchange programs with Asian countries. During the summers, I teach the Brown Reading Systems at private schools, most recently at I'olani. I have experience with both highly motivated and at-risk high school students, active military, and adults. During my years of teaching GED prep, I covered the four core subjects with focus on language arts and math.

The best successes come after their greatest disappointments

I like to make my tutoring sessions productive by encouraging students to work hard to complete the taste in order to receive a reward in the form of a game or something they enjoy doing. I am very thorough in correcting assignments and make sure they fully understand the concept they are working on. I am very helpful in stimulating critical thinking for creative writing assignments.
I have experience with pre k to 8th grade tutoring in Math and English tutoring to help students prepare for Iolani and Punahou entrance exams through Dr. Takahashi Juku. I love working with children and adults!

I have experience in being a student in both business, math, science and language arts. I hired tutors for my children and I tutored my children but I have not begun to tudor myself. I am looking forward to the experience of tutoring and hope that each experience is fun and worth the money. If not, I will refund the money.
I am an informal teacher because I do not yet have the experience teaching in a formal setting accept for writing lesson plans for language arts. Otherwise, I am looking forward to working with adults and children on their studies because they need the help.
