My experience suggests that students must participate to fully benefit from the teaching and learning experience. This implies that they must be interested in the subject. Therefore it is, in part, the teacher's role to engage the students and guide them in a manner that engenders their interest.
Beyond this I have found that students respond best when their strengths are recognized and their efforts rewarded. To maximize effectiveness it is also necessary for the teacher to determine the learning style of each particular student and to provide lessons that allow students to learn in the manner most comfortable and effective for them.
