As a UNCP alumnus, I currently hold a BS in Biology. I have tutored peers in the past during my second year at UNCP. Subjects that I am familiar are science and math. I have a lot of experience in the science field. I currently work full-time in a lab using my science degree. I’m eager to work as a tutor and use my experience to help advance someone else’s education. I have approximately one year of experience of professional teaching working with a grant funded program at UNCP. With this program was very hands-on and interactive with the students. I worked directly with the professors in the science department.

I am an avid believer in authentic learning and have taught using differential instruction for many years. I have not taught anyone or tutored anyone for money. However, I would like to have the oppitunity to be able to tutor children or young adults on their way of the journey of life. I too was tutored going through school and not just once. I attended Sylvin Learning Center every other year since sixth grade. It helped me understand the areas that I didnt and excel in the areas I did. I would like to give thas opportunity to someone else. I learned through visual aid. So, I guess I would lean towards this style of teaching. However, if a student learns better with audio aid then I would be willing to combine the two methods to better educate the student. My goal is to provide the best education possible and to suceed in that is to have great communication and alittle fun doing the work that is expected.

I have tutored students since my undergraduate years. I continue to give back to community through many projects. The sorority I am apart of hold many tutoring sessions to students. Also through my church we hold tutoring sessions. I have been involved in both projects for more than 5 years. I have tutored in English, elementary grade Math and Science. The best way to describe my teaching style is to find a creative way to remember material. For example, I have a child that had to memorize his prepositions. We made up a song that included them all, in order. It turned out to something like this....ABOARD a ship AS we were traveling ABOUT eight knots, etc. This style was very effective for memorizing. For subjects that require more understanding than memorizing, I prefer my "teach and try" method. This means that I go through multiple problems with a student explaining the steps involved. Then, I set-up a mock test to test their abilities solo. I therefore can grasp their understanding and pinpoint their weaknesses.
