Accounting is one of my top subjects! I am an Accounting student at FGCU who will be entering the master's program in the Fall of 2013. I currently hold a 3.95 GPA and am tutoring Intermediate 3 accounting, Accounting Information Systems and Managerial Accounting. I love teaching and helping my fellow students understand the concepts from a real world perspective. I explain that accounting is just another language you have to learn and understand. I am a creative person and bring life to the topic with my own notes and the occasional poster board example. I also hold a Bachelor's degree with a concentration in English that I received in 2004. I hope to enter a PhD program in Florida and eventually become an Accounting professor.

I am a creative person and love to bring that creativity into the tutoring session. I create my own notes to explain the textbook concepts and my own problems that are similar to what the student will be tested on. I like to use index cards, poster board, and whatever else will help bring the concepts to life for the student. My explanations change depending on what life experience the student has. A person who has been in the business community for twenty years will have a different perspective than a nineteen year old who has never worked. The purpose of tutoring is to use what the student knows to help explain the concepts.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe the first step is to always ascertain where a student is in their comprehension of the subject and what their propensity is to learn (i.e. quick learner, learns by examples etc.). That gives me an idea of how fast/slow to go and how best to get to cement actual learning. Generally, I like to get the student to arrive at answers by asking pointed questions so that their minds can understand the process versus simply memorizing the answers. I also believe in providing both positive feedback as well as constructive criticism where needed.

Growing up the son of an English teacher, and a high school principal, education was obviously paramount in the home environment. I graduated from Indiana University with Business Degree, most of my work experience was in training and development of new employees, with a strong emphasis on demonstration, explaination and using real world applications. As a licensed commercial pool contractor, math, physics, chemistry, hydraulics, technical interpretation and common sense are all necessary skills used everyday in a real setting. After receiving an Associate Degree in Business Finance from Rutgers University I transferred to Northwestern University and obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration with emphasis on Finance and Accounting. Subsequently I earned the Certified Public Accountant designation from the State of Illinois. I spent most of my business career as a Controller and then VP of Finance primarily in the home buiding industry. I have been retired for two years. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe the best way to teach is to relate the subject to the children. A child may not understand fractions but if you ask them to divide up a candy bar, they know how many pieces they want to split it in to and how many they want. I believe that listening is the key to teaching. A good teacher and a good listener is the difference between a child attending school and a child excelling in school.
While living in Japan, I taught English to the Japanese nationals and was a teacher's aide in the Department of Defense Dependent's Schools in the special needs department.
