I have historically been a sketch artist. This talent led to me into graphic design for advertising. I later majored in advertising and worked several internships and practicums with a variety of ad agencies and publication, including Southern Living. Over half of my 24-year is comprised of creative management positions. Recently, I decided to get back into higher education to earn my Masters degree in graphic design.
I consider myself more of a facilitator than a dictator but I do expect my students to show initiative. My goal is for every student to succeed.

I believe that all children can learn and all children are capable of learning. But, all students learn differently, so, I feel that by changing lessons and incorporating different things into each one to accomodate most, or all, students is necessary. When children are able to learn and gain experiences on their own, with little or no teacher intervention, they learn at their best. By doing fun activities, children are able to gain and retain knowledge better. I have a natural passion for educating youth of all ages and find joy in helping them succeed. No child is unreachable when it comes to connecting with them. I earned a degree in Biology, which has fully equipped me for tutoring to children who have difficulties in any subject, but especially science. By being a Biology major I was exposed to all types of seminars, scientific research, labs and other various types of learning implements that have been beneficial in my teaching practices. In the past two years I have privately tutored two children from the ages of 5 and 7. I have tutored them in every subject from reading, and math to science projects. A Little Bit About Me...

As a Theater Arts Educator, I have worn many hats. It never ceases to amaze me that each lesson I prepare for my theater classes also includes a grammar, math, science and history lesson too! Theater works on building one's self-esteem. I feel that self-esteem is a crucial building block for all learning. In addition to theater, I have taught public speaking, speech and debate as well as reading. I have experience teaching students of all ages.

I believe that there are several learning modalities. In response to this, I use an experimental approach to teaching. This enables the student to fully engage in the material in a way that allows them to understand and apply the information. I also find it necessary to create a learning environment that is relaxed, non-stressful and creative. Some possibilties are: natural sunlight, healthy snacks (fruit or nuts, if non allergic), water, a short walk during a break, and a good laugh.

I began 'teaching' as the head wakeboarding instructor at Coble Ski School in Lillington, NC, when I was a junior in high school. Shortly thereafter I took a position working at a beach resort in Pensacola, FL, where I spent an entire summer instructing surfing, kayaking and sailing. At Duke I tutored during each of my four years, either biweekly at a local Durham elementary school or at the Emily K Family Life Center.
