Highly Experienced Teacher/Director looking to help students

Students best learn by doing, by experiencing, and from a variety of experiences that incorporate their five senses. Students learn with different paces and styles. There is no one way for a student to become well-rounded, it is just a matter of providing experiences where the student can learn from the environment. It is not a matter of one student being better than the other, rather it is a matter of students learning in different ways.
My experience entails a well rounded experience of teaching students from preK to adult. My most important position was acting as Director of Education for Sylvan Learning, where I basically ran the learning center. I supervised teachers and all student programs, conferred with parents from the beginning to the end of their experience with Sylvan, and did so much more to develop a positive experience with all clients and teachers involved. I volunteered at the Ocean County Library writing center for four years and helped my peers construct, organize, and layout essays. I also proofread, edited, and helped in the creative process of their essays. I am curreently working part-time at Ocean County Library (Lakewood Branch) tutoring k-12 students after school in the S.M.A.R.T kids program.
I focus on starting small and helping the student develop on their own. For example, when I teach how to write a strong essay, we write many drafts of an introduction. Then, we write many drafts of body paragraphs. Last, we would focus on writing a conclusion. Then, by working seperately on all of an essay's parts, the combined product is much stronger. The art of teaching is similiar to building a house: you start with an idea, then a foundation, and finally the framework.

A Little Bit About Me...

During my journey to complete my B.S. of Biology at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey I was inspired to help others educate themselves. I informally tutored my peers in biology and writing courses. I was recommended to become a writing tutor at this institution but was graduating too early to complete the required qualifying courses. I edited a plethora of biology lab reports as well as research papers for various majors. I completed my Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). I have studied chemical and biological sciences for 4 years and completed an exam that assesses my knowledge I have acquired from such courses.
Through my experience with Big Brothers Big Sisters and MAXIM Healthcare Services, I have tutored many children with different educational backgrounds that required different concentrated attention. I gau ... read more

I just graduated with a BA in Psychology and are two courses short of a minor in Spanish and Sociology. I've always been very strong in the English/Language Arts/Writing areas as well. I am currently a certified substitute teacher and also already do some elementary tutoring. Some of my previous tutoring experience include writing, some psychological statistics and some basic math/language skills.
I love to teach and help others in general. I always had difficulty when I was younger finding a tutor or some help in my studies that I could understand easily. I am a very patient and have a great sense of humor that come in handy during subjects of frustration. I believe if you can bring a child into their comfort zone and put the directions in the most simple fashion, a child can learn anything! I'd love to turn a subject they avoid into a subject to brag about...

A Little Bit About Me...

Tutoring is very important to me. I learn as well as teach through my process. Although I believe grammar is very important, I aim to teach organizational skills within any student's writing. I have noticed that most students have more difficulty with making connections within their own writing than with grammar. Furthermore, I find an immense pleasure in successfully tutoring a student. I understand that students can feel nervous, angry, and upset when they are being tutored; I make sure to consider their feelings so I can gain their trust. A student who trusts their instructor is always more willing to learn. Finally, if I can make a person happier about learning then I consider myself successful.

As an educator, I have tutored students in mathematics and English from grades 4 through college level. I have taught songwriting in summer camps, 4th grade language arts and ESL to high school kids fresh from Korea. Also, as a Youth Advocate, part of my job description was helping my kids with school work and homework.

As an educator, my understanding and approach to learning comes from placing myself in the perspective of the student. Therefore, student's opinion on coursework needs to be heard in order to create effective learning goals. I believe this will increase a student's motivation and connection to the material. More About This Tutor...

As a professional journalist with 10 years of experience, I make a living by writing clearly, concisely and accurately. Part of my job as an editor is to help less experienced writers achieve a high professional standard in their use of language. Having majored in English in college, I am also very good at writing academic essays, particularly on the subject of English literature.
As a tutor, I seek to emulate the teachers in my education who taught me the most: the ones who were kind, patient, and who never stopped encouraging me. I believe that students learn best by doing, and that this is especially true when it comes to writing. Students best gain confidence through practice, with the guidance of a patient instructor. In writing, it is important to help students correct their mistakes, but to do so in a way that is not demeaning or belittling.

As a young man I had several problems with math. It turns out that I was unable to visualize what the equations meant in abstract algebra and calculus. Eventually I was able to relate these concepts to subjects that I found interesting such as music and archaeology. Therefore creating more interest in the subjects that I gravitated to naturally. I believe that I could explain concepts to others in a way that suits their interests. At the end of the day the reason I would be a good tutor is that I am truly interested in learning and teaching what I learn.
