Highly Experienced Teacher/Director looking to help students

Students best learn by doing, by experiencing, and from a variety of experiences that incorporate their five senses. Students learn with different paces and styles. There is no one way for a student to become well-rounded, it is just a matter of providing experiences where the student can learn from the environment. It is not a matter of one student being better than the other, rather it is a matter of students learning in different ways.
My experience entails a well rounded experience of teaching students from preK to adult. My most important position was acting as Director of Education for Sylvan Learning, where I basically ran the learning center. I supervised teachers and all student programs, conferred with parents from the beginning to the end of their experience with Sylvan, and did so much more to develop a positive experience with all clients and teachers involved. I have ... read more

Reading is the Key to Success!

I have worked in the field of education as a teacher for 30 years. I have taught basic skills in foundations of Reading to middle school students. I have also taught all subject areas to elementary school children. The most memorable and most valuable experience in my career was teaching first graders how to read. It takes a trained professional to be able to lay out the framework children need to learn how to read. Reading skills on the first grade level are the most rudimentary and applicable to all grade levels there after.
My teaching style is flexible. I create a lesson plan that is individualized and benficial to that of the student I am tutoring. I adapt and adjust the curriculum to what is of primary importance to my student.

Interactive, based on the needs of each student to attain proficiency.

A Little Bit About Me...

I focus on starting small and helping the student develop on their own. For example, when I teach how to write a strong essay, we write many drafts of an introduction. Then, we write many drafts of body paragraphs. Last, we would focus on writing a conclusion. Then, by working seperately on all of an essay's parts, the combined product is much stronger. The art of teaching is similiar to building a house: you start with an idea, then a foundation, and finally the framework.
I volunteered at the Ocean County Library writing center for four years and helped my peers construct, organize, and layout essays. I also proofread, edited, and helped in the creative process of their essays. I am curreently working part-time at Ocean County Library (Lakewood Branch) tutoring k-12 students after school in the S.M.A.R.T kids program.

During my journey to complete my B.S. of Biology at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey I was inspired to help others educate themselves. I informally tutored my peers in biology and writing courses. I was recommended to become a writing tutor at this institution but was graduating too early to complete the required qualifying courses. I edited a plethora of biology lab reports as well as research papers for various majors. I completed my Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). I have studied chemical and biological sciences for 4 years and completed an exam that assesses my knowledge I have acquired from such courses.

Tutoring is very important to me. I learn as well as teach through my process. Although I believe grammar is very important, I aim to teach organizational skills within any student's writing. I have noticed that most students have more difficulty with making connections within their own writing than with grammar. Furthermore, I find an immense pleasure in successfully tutoring a student. I understand that students can feel nervous, angry, and upset when they are being tutored; I make sure to consider their feelings so I can gain their trust. A student who trusts their instructor is always more willing to learn. Finally, if I can make a person happier about learning then I consider myself successful.

A Little Bit About Me...

I began tutoring K through 5th graders at an elementary school. Many of my students only spoke Spanish at home. From then, I continued tutoring elementary school students with a wide range of abilities. A few of my students were gifted, and we worked on sharpening their already existing skills. Many of my students struggled in a specific area, and we were able to incorporate general study skills into our lessons. I was able to help all of my students with book reports and other projects that were more time consuming than regular homework assignments. Throughout college and law school I refined my own studying habits. I believe I can pass my study skills onto my students and help them focus, manage their time, learn and succeed.

A Little Bit About Me...

I just graduated with a BA in Psychology and are two courses short of a minor in Spanish and Sociology. I've always been very strong in the English/Language Arts/Writing areas as well. I am currently a certified substitute teacher and also already do some elementary tutoring. Some of my previous tutoring experience include writing, some psychological statistics and some basic math/language skills.
I love to teach and help others in general. I always had difficulty when I was younger finding a tutor or some help in my studies that I could understand easily. I am a very patient and have a great sense of humor that come in handy during subjects of frustration. I believe if you can bring a child into their comfort zone and put the directions in the most simple fashion, a child can learn anything! I'd love to turn a subject they avoid into a subject to brag about...

More About This Tutor...

Teaching is something I love to do. Even more compelling is when a student of mine gets the big idea, or the concept, and wants to know more. My goal is to build a good relationship with a student, one based on trust and mutual respect. Students also need to experience a series of small successes academically to begin to gain confidence and see themselves as competent people who can learn. This helps them take ownership of their own learning, which is essential. I believe lessons should be presented in high-interest ways and be linked to the real world, too. Any technology (Internet, iPad, etc.) that can be used to achieve this goal is helpful too.
