Highly Experienced Teacher/Director looking to help students

Students best learn by doing, by experiencing, and from a variety of experiences that incorporate their five senses. Students learn with different paces and styles. There is no one way for a student to become well-rounded, it is just a matter of providing experiences where the student can learn from the environment. It is not a matter of one student being better than the other, rather it is a matter of students learning in different ways.
My experience entails a well rounded experience of teaching students from preK to adult. My most important position was acting as Director of Education for Sylvan Learning, where I basically ran the learning center. I supervised teachers and all student programs, conferred with parents from the beginning to the end of their experience with Sylvan, and did so much more to develop a positive experience with all clients and teachers involved. I have ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Writing, reading, and english have always been my passions. I don't have any formal training within the english tutoring or teaching worlds; however, I have always been a "go-to" for friends and classmates whenever they had questions or concerns about their assignments. Next fall I will be heading back to school in order to obtain my teaching credentials, and in the meantime, I thought that I would use my talents to help others.

A Little Bit About Me...

I focus on starting small and helping the student develop on their own. For example, when I teach how to write a strong essay, we write many drafts of an introduction. Then, we write many drafts of body paragraphs. Last, we would focus on writing a conclusion. Then, by working seperately on all of an essay's parts, the combined product is much stronger. The art of teaching is similiar to building a house: you start with an idea, then a foundation, and finally the framework.
I volunteered at the Ocean County Library writing center for four years and helped my peers construct, organize, and layout essays. I also proofread, edited, and helped in the creative process of their essays. I am curreently working part-time at Ocean County Library (Lakewood Branch) tutoring k-12 students after school in the S.M.A.R.T kids program.

I began tutoring K through 5th graders at an elementary school. Many of my students only spoke Spanish at home. From then, I continued tutoring elementary school students with a wide range of abilities. A few of my students were gifted, and we worked on sharpening their already existing skills. Many of my students struggled in a specific area, and we were able to incorporate general study skills into our lessons. I was able to help all of my students with book reports and other projects that were more time consuming than regular homework assignments. Throughout college and law school I refined my own studying habits. I believe I can pass my study skills onto my students and help them focus, manage their time, learn and succeed.

I would describe my style with one word, "patient." I have a creative approach, an outgoing personality, and an encouraging demeanor. I am after results; I feel that every individual person benefits from various learning techniques and "one certain way" may not work with every student. A degree in the specific subject area, another soon-to-be degree in actually teaching that subject area, and real-world experience in the writing field within notorious companies, make me the most suited instructor to guide a young person to their fullest potential.
I have not only graduated college with a BA in Communications and a specialization in journalism, I am also currently enrolled back in school to earn additional credits for my teaching certification. Through my experience with Big Brothers Big Sisters and MAXIM Healthcare Services, I have tutored many children with different educational backgrounds that required different concentrated attention. I gauge how I tutor a child by their personal needs. I take the time needed to understand the child’s personality and listen to which is their preferred style of learning. I choose to gain their trust and build their confidence immediately. Used techniques are: verbal (lecture), visual (flashcards, diagrams, etc.), repetition (both verbal and visual), games, question and answer sessions, and more. It is most important to use the method that is the most effective to the child’s educational and emotional needs.

I love to share my knowledge of the English language with others, and take joy in seeing others learn to craft words effectively. I believe teaching others to use language properly is an empowering experience, and I do so through patient explanation, example, and brainstorming. I use methods that encourage my students to self correct, which enables them not only to improve the assignment they're working on, but also helps them recognize their mistakes to become better writers overall. It is my firm belief that every student can learn to write well if they are given the right tools and the right training. When I teach students, I strive to bring out each writer's voice and tone through encouragement and instruction.

As a tutor, I seek to emulate the teachers in my education who taught me the most: the ones who were kind, patient, and who never stopped encouraging me. I believe that students learn best by doing, and that this is especially true when it comes to writing. Students best gain confidence through practice, with the guidance of a patient instructor. In writing, it is important to help students correct their mistakes, but to do so in a way that is not demeaning or belittling.
As a professional journalist with 10 years of experience, I make a living by writing clearly, concisely and accurately. Part of my job as an editor is to help less experienced writers achieve a high professional standard in their use of language. Having majored in English in college, I am also very good at writing academic essays, particularly on the subject of English literature.

I like to adapt my style to the student's personality and learning style. Some students learn best through visual methods, some auditory and some prefer experiential learning. While textbooks often provide a good foundation, I like to use "real world" teaching if possible. My goal is to provide the best education at the adequate pace for the student. I love reinforcing concepts so that my students are able to conceptually understand what they are learning.
