Teaching is a personal act. Though I have enjoyed being in the classroom and seeing students develop as a community of learners, I have seen the most progress by addressing students' individual needs in a one-on-one situation. I see literature as one of most effective ways that people come to understand one another, the act of reading being a fundamentally unselfish and inquisitive act, an attempt to make sense of and relate to another person’s perspective. Writing is reading’s reciprocal act—a kind of reaching out in hopes of being understood, in adding somehow to the volumes of human perspectives. These are keys to democratic living. It is a great thrill for me to see these discoveries take place within the students I teach.
Having recently graduated with a master's degree in Literature and Writing, during which I also taught two college-level freshman writing courses, I am well ... read more

When it comes to math, there is always more than one way to attack the problem at hand and each method appeals to different students. I usually start off with one and I can quickly tell if another would be more effective for each individual since I've noticed everyone has different styles of learning. I do believe everything mathematical can be taught and learned - there are no lost causes when it comes to math.
I received my BS in Electrical Engineering in December. I was one of two who graduated under the Honor's Program and maintained a 3.72 GPA. I've been tutoring math ever since my second semester in college and even while I was in high school. I've taken Calculus 3, differential equations, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics and received an A in each of them. I have a great deal of experience along with a sound background in mathematics.

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from a small, hands-on high school that focused on experiential learning. This coupled with my time at a small liberal arts college dedicated to teaching more than research, has shown me the value of a one on one relationship with a teacher. I believe all students learn in different ways. It is the task of a good teacher to find the strengths of each student and to teach them to overcome their weaknesses. Often it is not mastering content that presents a problem for students, rather it is that they have never been taught how to learn. I strive to help my students to discover their unique style of learning so they can apply it every subject they study.
I have earned my BS in Biology from Westminster College. I am currently applying to veterinary schools to become an equine veterinarian. This path has led me to master the basic sciences, including biology, chemistry and p ... read more

I love teaching, but to students about 12 and older. I am able to relate and connect well with them, and let them learn and take pride in their progress. Especially with younger kids, a high degree of focus on my part can be necessary to keep them on task, but I find that one can be firm with them and not need to be patronizing or forceful.
I have previously been a tutor for private individuals while I was making my way through college, and also as a professional duty while I was employed by the Salt Lake City Public Library, where I worked for six years. I have not been a tutor for a few years, although I currently volunteer with the International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake by assisting program workers teach english speaking and reading skills to new refugee immigrant women.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a Master of Arts degree in English from Utah State University and have taught EFL overseas and within the US. Recently (from 07-08), I worked as a Math Tutor for challenged fifth graders and also for Kindergarteners part-time at Lincoln Elementary in Layton while my son was in pre-school. I am competent in elementary math and sincerely enjoy helping others to find the inherent beauty of numbers and what they can do.
I love kids - they are often sweet, funny, easily impressed and are a great audience. I know that it is possible to make learning fun through a close, interactive relationship with a student - showing and guiding them through your own discovery of the subject. There have been times when I could feel one of my students learning; it is always a smile-provoking moment and I treasure every one.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have explored the learning process in every capacity. As someone who has experienced the frustrations of learning while having ADHD and dyslexia, I have struggled with the learning process, examined it critically, and have succeeded. Additionally, revising, presenting, and publishing articles and papers has not only polished my knowledge of writing but has led me to teach these skills to others. I first tutored writing my senior year in high school. Two years later, after two month's training, I taught English in Mexico for three months to students at all levels and of all ages. Finding the experience to be a rewarding opportunity for both teaching and learning, I returned to my university’s writing center to tutor for the next year and a half. My one-on-one collaborative tutorials in writing, organization, grammar, and revision were coupled by 50-minute classes on speed reading ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated with honors from Univ of Utah and then completed MBA while working full time. I have invested 25 years in business operations management as a career. I have not received anything less than an A- in a math class since 8th grade. I have been adjunct teaching at Salt Lake Community College and LDS Business College since Fall 2003. I have taught mathematics, statistics, and software applications. Course evaluations have always been high, and student feedback has been very positive. Education is the key to any improvement effort - productivity, quality, etc. I have also tutored approx 10 students during the last 5 years.
I love watching people learn - seeing the mental light bulbs turn on and glow. My style is one that encourages collaboration and involvement between teacher and student. I strive to not be the sage on the stage, rather the guide on the side. W ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Ever since I was a young girl, I have loved learning. This passion for learning new things has given me the motivation to earn my Bachelor's degree in Humanities (emphasis: Music) as well as my Master's degree in Comparative studies. Through the writing and publication of my thesis, I have gained valuable experience editing, researching, and proofreading as well as learning analytical and critical thinking skills. As a Humanities major with an emphasis area in Music as well as a French minor, my undergraduate education has prepared me to be able to teach a wide array of subjects.
I love seeing people learn. I love the look in a student's eye when they think about something in a way they've never thought about it before. I love to facilitate that type of learning because it brings me great satisfaction. I especially love to work with children because they are so willing to learn and ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

During my undergraduate education at the University of Utah I worked for Upward Bound and for Student Services as a tutor for both High School and College Students. During those three years I tutored all levels of Math as well as Physics, Chemistry and Engineering. I also taught ACT preparation courses. Since then I have tutored students on occasion from elementary age through undergraduate levels in both formal and informal settings. The reason I continue to tutor is the great enjoyment I get from helping someone achieve understanding that they were unable to obtain from their classroom or individual studies.
My tutoring style is based on three principles: patience, excitement for the subject and alternative explanations. Through my tutoring experience and having children of my own I have been able to develop the patience to allow students to work through problems and gain t ... read more
