I find that there is something fascinating that we encounter on a daily basis. I enjoy bringing those events to light, and fostering student interest in the world around us. Whether it is a physical phenomenon, an inquiry into a scientific question, or a piece of literature, I believe that the relationship that is developed between the material and the learner is the tool through which real learning occurs. I begin teaching each tutee by first observing their own approach to studying, listening to their explanations and questions about the material, and indentifying their strengths and deficincies with respect to knowledge of the subject. Then I attempt to mold my approach based on these observations, course requirements, and my own personal belief that we are all capable of learning most anything as long as it is presented to us in a way we can understand and that is enjoyable and exciting for the student. If I were to sum my "style" of teaching up, it would be "patience with determination". Perhaps my best achievment is with my wife who recently graduated from A-B Tech. Kate has always had a block toward anything mathematic. She had one course between her and graduation, college algebra! The bottom line here is that I patiently stuck through this course treatment with her to a successful completion, she completed the course and graduated with a well earned "C" or a 78%. With patience and determination shared together with the student, impediments like a dread for math can be overcome. The civil engineering program that I successfully completed into a 4 year BS degree, was math and science intensive, with about half the courses requiring laboratory work.
