I have been involved with youth for a long time as scoutmaster and as coach in recreational soccer. I enjoy working with children, especially if they are willing to learn and improve their skills and knowledge. I assess the student's grasp on the subject and determine where assistance is needed. Using various means I then help the student to get the knowledge needed to achieve academic success.
As a student in high school, I became fascinated with Chemistry and went on to earn a BS in Chemistry. The position I landed after school dealt with additives in rubber and plastics, so eventually I went on to earn a MS degree in Polymer Science. This helped me to land a better position. When the recession hit around 2000 and I lost my job, I determined to learn more about computers and summarily earned two AA degrees while working first part-time and later full-time in the computer field. It is my belief that every person learns differently. Students learn best by different methods and learn at different methods. I find that the best way to tech a student, especially in a one on one environment is to find how the individual best learns and use that, rather than trying to teach by any already formulated method.
As an engineering graduate from Georgia Tech, I have a high level of skill in mathematics, from algebra to calculus and differential equations, and in sciences, especially physics. Also, I began my college career at the University of Alabama, where I was in the honors program. There I had to write numerous papers in the subjects of literature and history, while at Georgia Tech I became proficient in writing technical reports. Also, I have performed duties as a lifeguard and Special Olympics assistant coach, while working for Tuscaloosa County Parks and Recreat ... read more

While working as a private tutor, I was able to work one-on-one with an emotionally troubled teen, which helped me to learn that everyone learns at different speeds and in different ways. I was able to implement several learning strategies, until we found one that was most conducive to his learning. During my peer tutoring time at Brevard College, I had the opportunity to work with a handful of special needs students, including a form of autism. I loved the work I did as a private tutor, because I feel like you can get to know the student. I was able to encourage the teen to persue his interest in the theatrical arts. I enjoy teaching, especially on the personal level that is achieved through tutoring.
I am a recent graduate of Brevard College with a degree in Health Science Studies, which is a well-rounded degree, encompassing Physics, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, Biology ... read more

I started substitute teaching when I was in undergraduate school just as a source of income and because I like teaching. My mother is a retired teacher who taught for over 30 years. I work as an engineer but I always find time to tutor. I have tutored with an SES program and have found that this worked really well. Focusing on how the children learn as a method to approach how they should be tutored is very effective and the children learn.
I have substitute taught for over 16 years and this past year I worked with the SES program tutoring. My areas of focus are sciences and maths but I have had to tutor reading. This year I tutored middle school students but I have tutored elementary as well. I tend to focus on the high level maths and sciences often taking long term positions in high school.

I liken tutoring sessions to the repair of a crumbling pyramid. I believe that every student is capable of learning and understanding the material that is presented to them in class, but that due to some reason, he or she does not understand some of the basic concepts that later material adds onto. Hence, the base of their pyramid is unstable. Usually in the first tutoring session, I try to gauge where the student is supposed to be in the material while at the same time trying to figure out where the missing foundation stones are. Once key concepts are explained, I then give students some examples to bolster their confidence and to be sure that they have learned the material.
I have 6 years experience tutoring various aspects of math and chemistry to individuals of all ages: I was varsity captain of my high school math team and led tutoring sessions for algebra, geometry, trigo ... read more
