A Little Bit About Me...

I started substitute teaching when I was in undergraduate school just as a source of income and because I like teaching. My mother is a retired teacher who taught for over 30 years. I work as an engineer but I always find time to tutor. I have tutored with an SES program and have found that this worked really well. Focusing on how the children learn as a method to approach how they should be tutored is very effective and the children learn.
I have substitute taught for over 16 years and this past year I worked with the SES program tutoring. My areas of focus are sciences and maths but I have had to tutor reading. This year I tutored middle school students but I have tutored elementary as well. I tend to focus on the high level maths and sciences often taking long term positions in high school.

If students don't learn the way we teach, we must learn to teach the way they learn. I believe in Orton-Gillingham's philosophy of teaching everything using as many senses simultaneously as possible. Thus, I introduce and teach using manipulatives so lessons are hands-on and active. We move at a brisk pace and do not waste precious time! I love children and want what is best for them. They recognize this very early and work hard in return. It is especially rewarding to watch their confidence and self-esteem soar as they gain academic competence!
I have expertise in teaching reading and math from infancy to grade 8. I have successfully tutored college math and English. I have taught 6th, 1st, 4th and 2nd grade in SC and GA public schools. I have taught in a private school specializing in students with learning disabilities, dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, and autism. In 1999, I developed and o ... read more

I enjoy teaching almost as much as I enjoy learning. I believe that basic education skills are the foundation for success. Progressing through school in Independent Study Classes, I am fully aware that conventional methods of teaching and studying do not work for every child. I invite and accept the challenge of discovering new ways to share the knowledge that I have gathered so far in my educational career. I think it’s important to maintain patience and provide support to anyone who may need a little extra help learning a skill.
I began tutoring in the third grade after I was accepted into Independent Study Classes. I was selected to tutor my fellow classmates in spelling and reading comprehension. My volunteer tutoring continued throughout my grade school years and into my higher education career. Once in college, I was hired as a mental health worker and tutor to austitic child ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love being around and teaching kids. I am constantly around kids now. I am a single parent of a 10 year old dughter, and i am very into her school. First off i don't believe that a kid is dumb or doesn't know how to do anything. Children only know what we teach them. So if a child doesnt know how to do something it is a reflection on the teaching that he/she has had. I have never had a kids come to me and leave without learing more than they knew before they got to me. I believe in practice makes perfect, especially in math. To be great at math calls for repitition. The more you do the better you will get at it. I believe in real life examples, not in adult situations but something the child can relate to to help them better understand. I honestly feel that I am the best at helping students to understand math.
I graduated Cum Laude with a BS in Mathematics and a minor in Compute ... read more

I have 6 years experience tutoring various aspects of math and chemistry to individuals of all ages: I was varsity captain of my high school math team and led tutoring sessions for algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and statistics. I served as a cub scout assistant den leader until I entered college and used to help young scouts with their homework while babysitting for many of their families. I am currently in my final semester at Georgia Southern University and will graduate cum laude with a BS Chemistry degree and mathematics minor this December. My career goals are to eventually teach chemistry to college undergraduates, and to do some resaerch in the field of drug design for medicinal treatment of Alzheimer's.
